Anthea knew her hairdresser Marcel fancied her something rotten. He would catch her eye in the mirror and his hands would go all clumsy. Sometimes he’d lean too close and she’d feel his hot breath on the back of her neck. Let’s face it, he wasn’t big and muscular like Sam, but he had these rather dark, soulful eyes. Far more to the point, however, he always made her feel important. Unlike Sam!

So that evening Anthea took the plunge.

‘You look like a kind man, Marcel,’ she murmured as he fussed over her hair. ‘The sort who knows how to make a woman happy. I wish my Sam was like that.’

Marcel’s eyes became as round as marbles [28](глаза Марселя стали круглыми, как шарики).

‘You’re sad this evening,’ he observed, ‘I knew it when you walked in. Just tell me how I can make you happy.’

‘Sam forgot my birthday(Сэм забыл мой день рождения; to forget ) . So I’ll have to spend a lonely evening(так что мне придется провести одинокий вечер) watching telly(смотря телевизор) while he plays darts(пока он играет в дартс) ,’ lied Anthea(соврала Антея).

Marcel’s fingers danced joyfully over Anthea’s head(пальцы Марселя радостно заплясали над головой Антеи) . He hadn’t expected such a direct approach(он не ожидал такого прямолинейного подхода; direct – прямой; откровенный, неприкрытый ) . ‘We can’t have that now, can we(мы не можем этого позволить, правда) ,” he whispered in Anthea’s ear(прошептал он в ухо Антеи).
