‘The plonker’s forgotten my birthday(этот идиот забыл мой день рождения; to forget ) ,’ wailed Anthea(взвыла/простонала Антея; to wail – выть, стонать ) as the door slammed behind Sam(когда за Сэмом захлопнулась дверь).

She looked through a window(она посмотрела в окно) . Sam was walking down the road(Сэм шел вниз по дороге) to catch his bus(чтобы сесть на свой автобус; to catch – ловить ) . Anthea’s eyes narrowed(глаза Антеи сузились) . Wait a minute(минуточку) … there is something wrong(что-то здесь не так) , she thought uneasily(тревожно подумала она) . Sam didn’t look right somehow(Сэм выглядел как-то неправильно) . Only Anthea just couldn’t put a finger on it(только Андреа никак не могла понять, почему [26]) . Oh, forget it(о, забудь об этом) , she told herself(сказала она себе) . Nothing was going to spoil her beautiful day(ничто не испортит ее прекрасный день).

‘He must have got something on his mind,’ Jackie suggested. Yes, like the busty women in his newspaper! thought Anthea.

‘Anthea says Sam’s forgotten her birthday(Антея говорит, Сэм забыл про ее день рождения; to forget ) ,’ smirked Jackie(ухмыльнулась Джекки) when Wendy joined them(когда Венди присоединилась к ним).

Wendy grinned(Венди усмехнулась) as if she relished this news(как будто наслаждаясь этой новостью; relish – /приятный/ вкус, привкус, запах; приправа, пряность; to relish – получать удовольствие, наслаждаться ).

‘These things happen(такие вещи случаются) ,’ she muttered without much sympathy(пробормотала она без особого сочувствия).

‘Anthea says Sam’s forgotten her birthday,’ smirked Jackie when Wendy joined them.

Wendy grinned as if she relished this news.

Fighting back the urge to give her pals a black-eye each(борясь с желанием дать каждой из своих подруг в глаз; urge – побуждение, порыв, сильное желание; black-eye – синяк под глазом, подбитый глаз ) , Anthea said carefully(Антея осторожно сказала) , ‘I was hoping that the three of us could go out for a drink this evening(я надеялась, что мы втроем могли бы куда-нибудь сходить выпить сегодня вечером) . I’m having my hair done(у меня сегодня парикмахерская: «мне сделают мои волосы») , but I’ll be home by 6 pm(но я буду дома к 6 вечера) .’

Fighting back the urge to give her pals a black-eye each, Anthea said carefully, ‘I was hoping that the three of us could go out for a drink this evening. I’m having my hair done, but I’ll be home by 6 pm.’

‘Er(э-э) … okay, Anthea(хорошо, Антея) . Call me when you are ready(позвони мне, когда будешь готова) and we’ll decide where to meet(и мы решим, где встретиться) ,’ replied Jackie(ответила Джекки).
