So this was Carstairs’ Garage(итак, это был «Гараж Карстейрса») . She’d heard about it from many people(она слышала о нем от многих людей; to hear ) , and today she would be finding out for herself(и сегодня она все выяснит сама; to find – находить; to find out – узнать, разузнать, выяснить; понять; раскрыть /обман, тайну/ ).

Becky pulled into “Customer Parking”. So this was Carstairs’ Garage. She’d heard about it from many people, and today she would be finding out for herself.

A big, smiling man(крупный улыбающийся мужчина) with Andy Carstairs embroidered on his blue overalls(с /именем/ «Энди Карстейрс» вышитым на синей униформе) approached her(подошел к ней; to approach – приближаться, подходить ) . It was the boss himself(это был сам босс) , welcoming customers(встречающий клиентов; to welcome – приветствовать; радушно принимать ) . What a nice touch(какой приятный штрих; touch – прикосновение; штрих; характерная черта; to touch – прикасаться, трогать )!

A big, smiling man with Andy Carstairs embroidered on his blue overalls approached her. It was the boss himself, welcoming customers. What a nice touch!

‘Hi, call me Andy(привет, зовите меня Энди) ,’ he invited(предложил он; to invite – приглашать; побуждать, призывать ).

‘I’m Becky Phillips(я Бекки Филипс) .’ Her hand was enfolded in a warm, bear-like grasp(ее рука ощутила теплое, крепкое медвежье пожатие; to enfold – закутывать; обхватывать; bear-like – как у медведя; grasp – хватка; крепкое сжатие ) . ‘I have a booking(у меня заказ) . Several things needs attention(несколько вещей требуют ремонта; attention – внимание; ремонт ) – but I’ve just been too busy(но я просто была слишком занята) .’

‘Hi, call me Andy,’ he invited.

‘I’m Becky Phillips.’ Her hand was enfolded in a warm, bear-like grasp. ‘I have a booking. Several things needs attention – but I’ve just been too busy.’

Andy Carstairs looked deep into Becky’s eyes(Энди Карстейрс заглянул глубоко в глаза Бекки; to look – cмотреть, глядеть ) and took his time letting go of her hand(и поколебался, прежде чем отпустить ее руку; to take one’s time – не торопиться: «взять свое время»; to let go – отпустить: «позволить уйти» ) . ‘I understand(я понимаю) ,’ he said in a velvety bass voice(сказал он низким бархатным голосом; bass – бас; басовый, низкий ) , ‘there comes a time when we can’t put it off any longer(приходит время, когда мы уже не можем дольше это откладывать; to put – класть; to put off – откладывать /что-л. на более поздний срок/ ) .’

Andy Carstairs looked deep into Becky’s eyes and took his time letting go of her hand. ‘I understand,’ he said in a velvety bass voice, ‘there comes a time when we can’t put it off any longer.’

Laying on the charm a bit thick, wasn’t he(флиртует немного слишком, не так ли; to lay – класть, положить; charm – шарм, обаяние, очарование; привлекательность; to lay on a charm – очаровывать; флиртовать, заигрывать; thick – толстый /в том числе о слое/ ) ? thought Becky(подумала Бекки; to think ) . Not that she minded(не то что бы она была против; to mind – возражать; быть против чего-л. ).

Laying on the charm a bit thick, wasn’t he? thought Becky. Not that she minded.

‘If you’ll step this way(не пройдете ли сюда; step – шаг; to step – делать шаг; ступать, шагать ) ?’ continued Andy(продолжал Энди) . He spread one hand invitingly(он приглашающе простер одну руку) while snapping the fingers of the other(щелкнув пальцами другой) like a head-waiter at a swanky restaurant(как старший официант в роскошном ресторане; swanky – роскошный, шикарный, щегольской; to swank – бахвалиться, хвастать ) . A young mechanic darted forward(молодой механик рванулся вперед; dart – дротик; to dart – бросать, метать; рвануться, кинуться, помчаться стрелой ) and drove Becky’s little Ford into an inspection bay(и подогнал маленький «Форд» Бекки к смотровой платформе; to drive – гнать; вести машину ).

‘If you’ll step this way?’ continued Andy. He spread one hand invitingly while snapping the fingers of the other like a head-waiter at a swanky restaurant. A young mechanic darted forward and drove Becky’s little Ford into an inspection bay.
