Molly squirmed when Joan’s gaze travelled to her unfashionable shoes. Her cheeks felt warm from her ex-schoolmate’s rude stare. She was tempted to mumble her apologies and leave. But no, that just wouldn’t be right, she decided. Bravely she looked Joan in the eye.

‘Congratulations, Joan. You’ve done well for yourself,’ she said quietly.

‘Thank you,’ sang Joan in sweetly balanced tones, ‘I married well, you see, Sam is chairman of Neurom Computers. We’ve got two splendid boys at Eton. This year we got tired of our holiday homes so we spent the summer skiing in Gstaad.’

‘And you, Molly? Are you happy, my dear? You know, with your…’ she looked Molly up and down again… ‘I mean, with this life of yours?’ Joan wrinkled her nose and crinkled her stunningly made up eyes into something resembling concern.
