3.57 The important take‐away from this is that we must be careful about attempts to argue that something is wrong because it involves treating another human being as a means, without being clear about exactly what is involved, and whether what is at issue is treating someone as a ‘mere’ means.

1 We have seen in this chapter that particular, faulty types of arguments keep appearing in ethical analyses. Try summarizing in your own words what kinds of arguments these are, how they work, and why they are faulty.Given what you have read in this chapter, do you think it is possible to use patients who participate in clinical trials not as mere means?
