When I signed the contract for this book in December 2019, I was overjoyed and eager to get started in the New Year. However, 2020 was been a funny sort of year! On the second of January I had a stroke – I couldn't move my right arm or leg! Fortunately, thanks to my wife Clair's quick thinking, I was bundled into the car and driven to Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. Within an hour of my first symptoms, I had been assessed in A&E by the stroke team, had had my CT and MMR scans and been given my first dose of Aspirin. I was kept in, but to my shame, I am afraid that I kept trying to do things on my own, only to be told off by the ward staff and by Clair and my lovely granddaughter Anna. So, I was off work for three months, and to tell the truth, I was glad of the break from work. I had been overdoing it and my stroke was probably the result. And then came ‘Lockdown’! I must say that I enjoyed this period of time, because, as a family, we were suddenly released from the very many sets of demands on our time. Working from home was fine for me – all of what I had to do, including my teaching, could be done online. And I could get on with writing this book!
