And when the Priest reached the shore he saw the young Fisherman lying drowned in the surf, and clasped in his arms was the body of the little Mermaid. And he drew back frowning, and having made the sign of the cross, he cried aloud and said, `I will not bless the sea nor anything that is in it. Accursed be the Sea-folk, and accursed be all they who traffic with them. And as for him who for love's sake forsook God, and so lieth here with his leman slain by God's judgment, take up his body and the body of his leman, and bury them in the corner of the Field of the Fullers, and set no mark above them, nor sign of any kind, that none may know the place of their resting. For accursed were they in their lives, and accursed shall they be in their deaths also.'

And the people did (и люди сделали так) as he commanded them (как он приказал им), and in the corner of the Field of the Fullers (и в уголке Поля Сукновалов), where no sweet herbs grew (где не росли никакие душистые травы/растения; sweet — сладкий; душистый ), they dug a deep pit (они вырыли глубокую яму = могилу; to dig (dug) — копать, рыть ), and laid the dead things within it (и положили в нее мертвые создания = тела; to lay (laid) ).

And when the third year was over (а когда прошло: «закончилось» три года), and on a day that was a holy day (в день церковного праздника; holy — святой, священный ), the Priest went up to the chapel (Священник отправился в часовню; to go (went, gone) ), that he might show to the people (чтобы показать людям) the wounds of the Lord (раны Господа), and speak to them (и поговорить с ними) about the wrath of God (о гневе Господнем).

And the people did as he commanded them, and in the corner of the Field of the Fullers, where no sweet herbs grew, they dug a deep pit, and laid the dead things within it.

And when the third year was over, and on a day that was a holy day, the Priest went up to the chapel, that he might show to the people the wounds of the Lord, and speak to them about the wrath of God.

And when he had robed himself (а когда он облачился; to robe — одевать; облачать ) with his robes (в свои одеяния; robe — халат; одежды, одеяния ), and entered in (и вошел /в алтарь/) and bowed himself before the altar (и преклонился перед алтарем; to bow — кланяться ), he saw that the altar was covered (он увидел, что алтарь был покрыт) with strange flowers (какими-то странными цветами) that never had he seen before (которых он никогда раньше не видел). Strange were they to look at (чудно было смотреть на них), and of curious beauty (и были они какой-то странной красоты; curious — любознательный; странный, чудной ), and their beauty troubled him (и их красота заставила его волноваться), and their odour was sweet in his nostrils (и его ноздри /ощутили/ их сладкий/душистый аромат). And he felt glad (и он почувствовал себя радостным/веселым; to feel (felt) — трогать; чувствовать, glad — довольный; радостный ), and understood not why he was glad (и он не понимал, почему он радовался; to understand (understood) ).

And when he had robed himself with his robes, and entered in and bowed himself before the altar, he saw that the altar was covered with strange flowers that never had he seen before. Strange were they to look at, and of curious beauty, and their beauty troubled him, and their odour was sweet in his nostrils. And he felt glad, and understood not why he was glad.

And after that (и после этого) he had opened the tabernacle (он открыл дарохранительницу), and incensed the monstrance (и окурил фимиамом дароносицу; to incense — кадить ) that was in it (что была в ней), and shown the fair wafer to the people (и показал людям прекрасную облатку; to show (showed, shown), wafer — вафля; церк. облатка ), and hid it again (и снова скрыл ее; to hide (hid, hidden) — прятать, скрывать; закрывать ) behind the veil of veils (за священным покровом: «покровом из покровов»), he began to speak to the people (он начал говорить людям), desiring to speak to them of the wrath of God (желая сказать им о гневе Господнем). But the beauty of the white flowers (но красота белых цветов) troubled him (волновала его), and their odour was sweet in his nostrils (и их аромат был душист /в ноздрях его/), and there came another word into his lips (и другое слова пришло на его уста), and he spake not of the wrath of God (и он заговорил не о гневе Господнем), but of the God whose name is Love (но о Господе, чье имя Любовь = о Боге, что есть Любовь). And why he so spake (а почему он так говорил), he knew not (он не знал).

And after that he had opened the tabernacle, and incensed the monstrance that was in it, and shown the fair wafer to the people, and hid it again behind the veil of veils, he began to speak to the people, desiring to speak to them of the wrath of God. But the beauty of the white flowers troubled him, and their odour was sweet in his nostrils, and there came another word into his lips, and he spake not of the wrath of God, but of the God whose name is Love. And why he so spake, he knew not.

And when he had finished his word (а когда он закончил свою речь; word — слово; речь, разговор ) the people wept (люди плакали; to weep (wept) ), and the Priest went back to the sacristy (Священник вернулся в ризницу), and his eyes were full of tears (и глаза его были полны слез). And the deacons came in (и вошли дьяконы) and began to unrobe him (и начали раздевать его = и помогали ему разоблачиться), and took from him the alb (и сняли с него стихарь; to take (took, take) ) and the girdle (и пояс), the maniple (и орарь) and the stole (и епитрахиль). And he stood as one in a dream (и он стоял как во сне: «как человек во сне»; to stand (stood), dream — сон, сновидение; мечта ).

And when he had finished his word the people wept, and the Priest went back to the sacristy, and his eyes were full of tears. And the deacons came in and began to unrobe him, and took from him the alb and the girdle, the maniple and the stole. And he stood as one in a dream.
