Gustav Robert Kirchhoff /1824-1887/ did much pioneering work in the physics of light & heat, but one of his contributions to electrical engineering is his analysis of current behavior at junction in an electrical network & potential rises & drops around a closed path in an electrical system. Fig.4 represents a junction in a network into which currents I,, I 2& I 4are flowing. Each symbol stands Tor a certain number of amperes,& the direction of flow of each current is in the direction of its arrow. That is I, represents flow into junction, & should we write - I for this particular junction it would mean current flow opposite to the arrow direction. Kirchhoff’s current law states that the sum of all electric currents flowing to & from junction is zero. When we write^an equation based on this law, we are obliged to use a minus 6jgn when we deal with a current flowing away from the junction, as represented by the arrow associated with the 1 3symbol on the diagram.
