Main Functions
The system is designed for the following functions:
1. Prelubrication of stationary diesel alternator sets for adjustable periods and at adjustable intervals.
2. Starting, synchronizing and load distribution among the sets when a starting order is received, in accordance with a predetermined program.
3. Unloading, tripping of the circuit breaker and shutting down of a set on receipt of a stop instruction, in accordance with a predetermined program.
4. Maintaining the frequency of the distribution network constant within ±0.1 Hz regardless of the load.
5. Issuing starting instructions to diesel sets in accordance with a variable sequence, when the load on the sets which arc then in service exceeds the predetermined level for an adjustable period of time.
6. Issuing shutting-down instructions to diesel sets in accordance with a variable sequence, when the load on the sets then in service falls below a predetermined level for an adjustable period of time. The sequence of starting and stepping of sets may be selected by means of a switch in the control panel.
7. Replacing a set on which a noil-critical alarm is operative, by another unit.
8. Stopping a device set when a critical alarm is initiated.
9. Blocking the starting procedure for a set on which an alarm is operative, until the resetting push button or the alarm has been depressed.
10. Starting and connecting to the distribution network a predetermined number of diesel alternator sets in the event of a black-out.
11. Ensuring that sufficient alternator capacity is available before programmed loads are connected.
12. Transmitting information concerning alarms to the general alarm svstem.

Listen to the tape-recorded text and then retell the contents in your own words.
Part 11. Prelubrication
Prelubrication of a diesel engine implies that a stationary engine is lubricated by a separate electric motor-driven pump for a certain period of time and at certain intervals, e. g. 1 min every hour. This arrangement ensures that an oil film will be formed in the bearings and this oil will be sufficient for starting the diesel engine until its own directly-driven lubricating system is operative. The function is monitored by sensing, by means of a pressure switch designed for that purpose, that a certain lubricating oil pressure has been attained. If not, a “prelubrication alarm” will be initiated and starting of the set will be blocked.

3. List main functions of the system (ex. 17).
21 6
Record your answers on a tape.
1. What is the purpose of the automatic control equipment?
2. What are in your opinion advantages of the system?
3. What functions is the system designed for?

While listening to the recorded text make a flow chart of working conditions on board multipurpose ship. Then dwell on the subject with your fellow-student. Your flow chart will help you.
Work on Board Multipurpose Ship
I have been in charge of machinery on Pielstick-equipped ships for the last eleven years, most of time on banana boats.
When some people compare the medium-speed engines to slow-speed ones, they think there is so much more work to be done on the medium speeds. In a way they are right, but I think the main difference is the kind of work that is required.
With the medium-speed engine you have to have much closer contact with the manufacturer in the beginning. You have to know the characte-
ristics of your specific engine so you know what to look for, and what to do. You also have to keep a closer eye on temperatures, and generally be very exacting and professional all the time.
The greatest difference might be which part of your body you have to actuate. With the slow-speed engines you can use a lot of muscles, but with medium-speeds I think you are better off with a good brain.
Having responsibility for the economy, I feel very confident with the engine. Everything goes very smoothly and we haven’t had any serious problems so far. We did have one incident with the liners in the beginning. The manufacturer had installed the wrong ones, but changed them free of charge. So it was really no problem for us.
I remember the engines on the banana boat I was with before the multipurpose ship. They were similar to this engine. When I left after ten years the original liners were still in. We made inspections every 18,000 hours, but never found much wear.
