After the swim they sat damp-haired while sipping hot chocolate from a vending machine. At that point Stacey realised with a start that she’d started fancying Phil. But it didn’t last.

‘Isn’t that great(разве не здорово) ?’ Phil hurried on(поспешил продолжить Фил) , ‘because you could come and share my flat(потому что ты можешь переехать и жить со мной вместе: «разделить мою квартиру») . ‘Isn’t that great?’ Phil hurried on, ‘because you could come and share my flat. We needn’t let anything get too heavy, so we could still lead our separate grown-up lives.’

So that was what it had been all about(так вот что ему было нужно: «о чем все это было») , thought Stacey(подумала Стейси; to think ) . To find a woman(найти женщину) to share his rent and warm his bed(чтобы разделить с ним арендную плату и согреть его постель)!

So that was what it had been all about, thought Stacey. To find a woman to share his rent and warm his bed!

In the end none of the girls at the salon took up Phil’s offer, and he had to take in a bearded student type.

And tomorrow(а завтра) – no, today(нет, сегодня) , thought Stacey(подумала Стейси) as she glanced at her watch(взглянув на свои часы) showing 2 am(которые показывали 2 часа ночи) , either she or Phil would be the salon’s new manager(или она, или Фил станет новым управляющим салона) .
