‘So what happens now?’ asked Cathy as calmly as if she was enquiring the time of day.

‘That’s easy. You’re all set to let me coax you into spending the night with me.’ Martin’s narrow chest rose and fell in breathless outrage. ‘My word, you’re a terrific saleswoman,’ he plunged on, ‘and that’s straight from the horse’s mouth. You have even left all mention of the price until last!’

Cathy smiled serenely(Кэти безмятежно улыбнулась).

‘I guess it takes one to know one,’ she murmured.

Martin nodded decisively.

‘Right, I’m taking charge now,’ he told her. ‘Let’s get out of here and have some fun.’

Cathy finished the last of her drink and set her glass down carefully.

‘Actually I’ve changed my mind. I think I’ll stay and wait for John after all,’ she said with a remote look in her eyes.

‘Oh heck, enough is enough!’ exploded Martin. ‘What are you playing at now —’

Just then the pub door slammed open. Framed in the doorway stood a big man with brilliant blue eyes and curly brown hair. He held aloft a tiny object that twinkled.

The whole pub turned to stare as Cathy started to her feet(весь паб повернулся, чтобы посмотреть как Кэти вскочила на ноги; to start – начинать; бросаться, кидаться; рвануться ) , her face ecstatic(с восторженным лицом) , her eyes sparkling more brightly than any diamonds ever could(с глазами, сверкающими ярче, чем какие бы то ни было бриллианты когда-либо смогли) .
