Safety System

1. As a rule, the safety system is to come into action after the alarm system has operated.

2. Safety system of individual automated machinery is to operate when parameters exceed their limit values and is to cover all foreseeable fault conditions, assumed with regard to characteristics and operational properties of machinery concerned.

3. Safety system of internal combustion engines operating due to lubricating oil pressure drop and safety system of steam boilers operating due to low water level are to be independent of alarm and indicating systems, including the sensors.

4. Safety system of main internal combustion engine which may have influence upon manoeuvrability of the ship is to be provided with switching off facilities. The switching off device is to be of such design as to exclude the possibility of its unintentional use and in case of safety system being switched off its position is to be indicated by means of a special signal. The switching off device need not cover safety system operating due to lubricating oil pressure drop.

A Machine Tool

Madmen seem to keep up in step with the progress of science and technical development of the day since there is an ever increasing number of ballistic missiles, interplanetary rockets, atomic bombs and submarines of every kind there.

The other day when Doctor Nut junior had to sign in “an electric machine tool” his face did not show any surprise at all.

He assured the doctor he had just left the assembly line... Moreover, he had been provided with a rotary tool. . . He maintained his speed range was 20,000 rpm to 38,000...

Two days later Dr. Nut, accompanied by a group of students, entered the room where the “model” was treated.

— This is the tool! — said the doctor pointing to the fellow.

— No, I am not, — answered the madman with determination. — If I were really such a model I would be working now. But this does not seem to be the case because for the last two days I’ve been doing absolutely nothing! I must be something else more like a drawing board, but I’m not so sure about it yet...

Automatic Control of the Shaft Generators

In automatic electrical power plants using shaft generator additional shaft generator control unit is installed for automatic change over of the power supply between the shaft generator and the diesel-driven generators.

The shaft generator unit provides the following functions:

Excitation of the shaft generator

Synchronization to the distribution network and closure of the circuit breaker

Unloading and shutting-down of the diesel-driven generators operating in parallel

In the event of an alarm on the shaft generator, changing over from this generator to the stand-by generators

Switching a diesel-driven generator onto the distribution network and unloading of the shaft generator when “Shaft generator off” is requested

Field suppression on the shaft generator after tripping.
