“You must make a way for me to come in(ты должен сделать дорогу = проложить путь для меня, чтобы /я смогла/ войти) , and I’ll help you(и я помогу тебе) ,” said she.

“How can I do that(как я могу сделать это = как мне сделать это) ?” asked the king’s son(спросил королевич).

“I’m not thriving at all,” said the king’s son for as much as I throw out, twice as much comes in, and the door is closed against me.”

“You must make a way for me to come in, and I’ll help you,” said she.

“How can I do that?" asked the king’s son.

However, she did it(однако она сделала это = и все же ей это удалось; however [haʋ'evə] – однако, тем не менее ) . The giant’s daughter made her way into the stable(дочь великана проложила себе путь в конюшню; into ['ɪntə], ['ɪntu:] – в, вовнутрь ) , and she wasn’t long inside(и она недолго пробыла внутри) till the stable was cleared(пока = как конюшня была вычищена; to clear [klɪə] – расчищать, прочищать; освобождать; clear – светлый, ясный; свободный, незанятый ) , and she saw the slumber-pin(и она увидела ту самую сонную булавку).

“There is the pin(вот булавка) over there in the corner(вон там, в углу) ,” said she to the king’s son(сказала она королевскому сыну) , who put it in his bosom(который положил ее себе за пазуху; bosom ['bʋzəm] – /поэт./ грудь; пазуха ) to give to the giant(чтобы отдать великану).

However, she did it. The giant’s daughter made her way into the stable, and she wasn’t long inside till the stable was cleared, and she saw the slumber-pin.

“There is the pin over there in the corner,” said she to the king’s son, who put it in his bosom to give to the giant.

Now he was happy(теперь он был счастлив) , and the giant’s daughter had good meat and drink put before him(и дочь великана выставила: «имела поставленной» хорошую = обильную и вкусную еду и питье перед ним).

When the giant himself came home(когда великан пришел домой) , he asked(он спросил),

“How did you do your work today(как ты сегодня поработал: «как ты сделал твою работу сегодня») ?”

Now he was happy, and the giant’s daughter had good meat and drink put before him.

When the giant himself came home, he asked,

“How did you do your work today?"

“I did it well(я сделал ее хорошо) ; I thought nothing of it(для меня это оказалось пустяком: «я думал ничего о ней»; to think [θɪŋk] – думать; иметь какое-либо мнение; thought [θɔ:t] ; nothing – ничто; to think nothing of smth. – быть дурного мнения о чем-либо; считать что-либо пустяком ) .”

“Did you find the slumber-pin(ты нашел сонную булавку) ?”

“I did indeed(конечно: «в самом деле» /нашел/) ; here ’t is for you(вот, пожалуйста: «здесь она для тебя») .”

“I did it well; I thought nothing of it.”

“Did you find the slumber-pin?”

“I did indeed; here ’t is for you.”

“Oh(о) ! then(тогда) ,” said the giant(сказал великан) , “it is either the devil or my daughter(либо сам дьявол, либо моя дочь: «это есть либо дьявол…»; devil ['dev(ə)l] – дьявол; черт; either ['aɪðə] … or… – или… или… ) that helped you to do that work(помогли: «что помогли» тебе сделать ту работу) , for I know you never did it alone(ибо я знаю, /что/ ты вовсе не в одиночку выполнил ее: «ты никоим образом не сделал ее один»; never – никогда; /эмоц. – усил./ нисколько, никоим образом ) .”

“It’s neither the devil(это ни дьявол) nor your daughter(ни твоя дочь; neither ['naɪðə] … nor… – ни… ни ) , but my own strength that did the work(а моя собственная сила выполнила ту работу; strength [streŋθ]) ,” said the son of the king of Erin(сказал сын короля Эрина).

“Oh! then,” said the giant, “it is either the devil or my daughter that helped you to do that work, for I know you never did it alone.”

“It’s neither the devil nor your daughter, but my own strength that did the work,” said the son of the king of Erin.

“You have done the work(ты выполнил: «сделал» работу) ; now you must have your meat(теперь тебе нужно поесть: «ты должен получить твою пищу»; to have – иметь; получать; принимать /пищу, лекарство и т. п./, пить, есть; meat – мясо; /уст./ пища, еда ) .”

“I want no meat today(я не хочу сегодня никакой еды) ; I am well satisfied as I am(я вполне сыт: «вполне удовлетворен, как я есть»; well – хорошо, отлично; вполне; to satisfy ['sætɪsfaɪ] – удовлетворять, давать удовлетворение; утолять /голод/, насыщать ) ,” said the king’s son.

“Well,” said the giant(хорошо, сказал великан) , “since you’ll have no meat(раз ты не будешь есть: «не будешь есть никакой еды»; since [sɪns] – с /какого-либо момента/; поскольку ) , you must go to sleep in the tank(ты должен пойти спать в чан /с водой/) .”

He went into the tank(он пошел в чан) . The giant himself was soon snoring(сам великан вскоре /уже/ храпел: «великан сам был вскоре храпящим»; to snore [snɔ:]) , for he was tired(потому что он устал: «был уставшим») from hunting over Erin all day(от охоты = оттого, что охотился по всему Эрину весь день; to hunt [hʌnt] – охотиться; hunting – охота /процесс охоты/ ).
