So, the name of the game is stimulation, and the justification (or condemnation if you prefer) is "revolution." And, in that revolution we have unisex, group or communal sex, sensitivity and massage, swinger parties, etc. The common denominator running through the entire new wave of sexual freedom is oral sex-the taboo that practically everyone violates at one time or another.
Not to be dated and carted off to the old swingers' home, the over-thirty group are apt to justifiably complain that oral sex is nothing new, neither is it indigenous to today's youth, America, Western society, or even human beings. In fact, a large segment of the animal kingdom, though unoral in the human sense, are quite oral in the sexual sense. From panthers to puppy dogs, one of the best ways to get to know the opposite sex is still via mouth-genital contact. Even bugs do it.
One individual who made his life work the study and collection of sexual information was Dr. Alfred Kinsey. Predictably, Kinsey devoted sufficient attention to the topic of oral sex, which he, rather graphically, calls "mouth-genital contact." In his Sexual Behavior in the Human Female are some of his findings; first, with regard to mammalian origins of the aforementioned practice:
Among most species of mammals there is, in actuality, a great deal of sex play which never leads to coitus. Most mammals, when sexually aroused, crowd together and nuzzle and explore with their noses, mouths, and feet over each other's bodies. They make lip-to-lip contacts and tongue-to-tongue contacts, and use their mouths to manipulate every part of the companion's body, including the genitalia. They may nip, bite, scratch, groom, pull at the fur of the other animal, pull out fur, urinate, and repeatedly mount without, however, making any serious attempt to effect genital union. Such activity may continue for a matter of minutes, or hours, or even in some cases for days before there is any attempt at coitus. The student of mammalian behavior, interested in observing coitus in his animal stocks, sometimes may have to wait through hours and days of sex play before he has an opportunity to observe actual coitus, if, indeed, the animals do not finally separate without ever attempting a genital union.
Kinsey observed that there are few petting techniques in human sexual behavior which are not widespread among the other mammals.
Moreover, and more importantly, Kinsey's works point to the obvious conclusion that oral sex, rather than a "perversion" (as it is sometimes called) is one of the few things one can rely upon as being "organic," i.e., natural behavior. In other words, if you are going to have sex, you are going to have sex; and oral sex is sex.
It is important to place the concept of perversion in its proper perspective. Perversion, as Kinsey observes, is a result of man's ideas about sex, and have nothing whatever to do with the biological fact itself:
The wide distribution of non-coital sex play among all of the mammalian species on which there are sufficient data is evidence of the ancient origins of the anatomic and physiologic basis of such behavior some millions of years ago in the ancestral stocks of the class Mammalia. Indeed, some of the basic capacities on which petting behavior depends must have originated hundreds of millions of years ago among the ancient vertebrate stocks which gave rise to the mammalia; for sensory satisfactions obtained from the crowding together of animal bodies, from tongue-to-tongue contacts, and from mouth contacts with, other parts of the partner's body, are also evident in the behavior of some of the other vertebrates, including the lizards, still other reptiles, and the birds. In a biologic sense, petting is a normal or natural sort of behavior, and not the intellectually contrived perversion which it has sometimes been considered. In a biologic sense, the real perversion is the inhibition and suppression of such activities on the supposition that they represent "acts contrary to nature."
So, we see that oral sex is not only an over-thirty preoccupation, it is an over thirty-million-year-old tradition; nor is it merely human and/or monkey business. Indeed, the snake may have tempted Eve with somewhat more than an apple if Kinsey's analysis of reptilian sexual behavior is correct.
Strange as it may seem to most adults, sexual instruction is hardly necessary when children call upon racial memory and genetic programming, rather than the feeble recollections and distinctly guilt-ridden conditioning of their elders.
Nevertheless, in spite of the overwhelming evidence brought forth by most medical and psycho-logical authorities, the sexual laws-still active in all fifty states-indicate that the official ideal is far removed from actual sexual practices. And, judging by the rise of oral sex among the young, that gap is likely to increase tremendously as time goes on. That is, it will increase unless the professional moralists in society realize the danger inherent in the process of making a rather large portion of the population criminal merely because they yield to ancient animal urges.
Serious revolutionaries might very well applaud the stupidity of the establishment they wish to change over. Whenever a man's lips or mouth touches the sexual parts of a woman, there is a small voice in that man's head telling him that he is breaking the law; and a man, who knowingly-even joyously-breaks the law, is a potential revolutionary.
Until now, our discussion has focused primarily on the sociological and biological implications surrounding the practice of oral sex. And, incidentally, we are using the wider term "oral" rather than the two descriptive terms of fellatio and cunnilingus. By oral we mean the use of the mouth during sex. Only when fellatio and/or cunnilingus is used instead of, or in preference to conventional copulation will the specific terms be used. Otherwise it is safe to assume that men and women are polyperverse and perform cunnilingus, which, one might rightly presume, includes talking, eating, biting, blowing, humming as part of their sexual entertainment-compare the movie Tom Jones.
The question of why humans behave this way leads us into the psychological realm. We do not mean to imply, however that which is necessarily distorted or deviant. For the sensual majority, oral sex is the ultimate source of gratification or fulfillment. Therefore, using this technique is not a problem; in most instances, it is a normal adjunct to sex play.
In one of the most important studies made of the subject of sexual technique, Ideal Marriage, Theodoor H. Van De Velde refers to oral sex as the "genital kiss," in order to bypass other terms which, to him, imply distorted behavior. The author goes on to relate the psychological and physiological significance of the genital kiss as follows:
This type of stimulation has many advantages. First of all the lack of local secretion ceases to be a drawback, and even becomes an advantage. Secondly, the acuteness of the pleasure it excites and the variety of tactile sensation it provides, will ensure that the previous deficiency is made good; i.e., that sexual excitement and desire reach such a point that-either by these means alone or aided by other endearments-distillation takes place, heralding psychic and bodily readiness for a sexual communion, successful and satisfactory to both partners.
The genital kiss is particularly calculated to overcome frigidity and fear in hitherto inexperienced women who have had no erotic practice, and are as yet hardly capable of specific sexual desire.
Van De Velde goes on to point out the psychological benefits attained by the active partner as follows:
For the active partner, the pleasures of the genital kiss are wholly psychic. They center round the joy of giving joy to and rousing desire in the beloved, and the imaginative realization of this pleasure and desire. (Of course, this psychic pleasure may be intense, and transmit itself to the periphery, in the form of increased tumescence.) The feelings of the passive partner, on the other hand, however strong their emotional undertones, are predominantly peripheral, i.e., physical.
