"I fell asleep in his arms afterwards, my mind reliving my first oral-sexual experience. I promised myself it wouldn't be the last, either.
'That was before I went to Chaney College, too, before I knew anything about that scene. It was like a prophetic orgasm."
The dating ritual in America has in recent years, and in certain sectors of the society, undergone considerable, if not radical change. However, as this case so clearly illustrates, for most young people the sexual taboo is still strongly implanted within the individual.
From the outset, Carole shows high aptitude as a dating game player. Everything from dress codes to undressing codes proves her to be a product of her environment in its most conventional sense. In short, she is a conformist and must eventually suffer the psychological consequences-the penalties of conformism.
In her book Male and Female, Margaret Mead outlines the profound causes and effects of this unique cultural conditioning, a conditioning which de-emphasizes the natural bodily aspects of sexuality, and substitutes a rather complex pattern of behavior in which the mutual and healthy attraction of the sexes becomes hopelessly enmeshed with notions of achievement, reward and punishment.
Carole chose to open her narrative by describing the dressing ritual, the necessary preparations for "the right impression." Let us take a look at Mead's analysis of this peculiar American phenomenon called dating:
The game is described as dating; boys take out girls, girls have to be asked, boys have to ask, both must dress correctly according to the adolescent styles of the moment, the date must be conducted in some way so that it can be known to the rest of the group-otherwise it doesn't count. The long association of courtship and costume through the ages rather obscures the issue here. Because dating and dressing are so closely associated, the assumption is that it is courtship. But men have worn war-paint to impress their enemies or their male comrades, and women have done battle against their own sex in pearls and ostrich-feathers, before now. The clothes, the flowers, the dancing, are all part of the game, but they are to be equated neither with courtship nor with behavior that is primarily sexual, although the pattern of dating does, in the end, have a profound effect on the later relationships of men and women in America.
If clothing and appearance are not part of courtship in the traditional sense, as Mead clearly indicates, then why so great an emphasis in this area?
Predictably, the answer is to be found, not in the adolescent psyche, but in the parents who mold their children into what Mead calls "little potential bundles of high achievement."
In this process, sex and the body have very little to do with dating. It is the situation that counts. Being seen with the right person, making the right impressions in school or office, wearing the right clothes, bathing with the right soap, using the popular deodorants-all these patterns are derived from the competition for "situation," and must affect a person in later life.
Here is how Carole fits into this American mold. First, she is interested in "being popular," meaning she is careful of her "reputation," her situation-all of which adds up to middle class respectability. Second, she is living a competitive life-style, which means she is afraid of what others will think of her, and all social action is calculated according to notions of advantage. Third, Carole is envious of girls in better homes, schools, cars, etc. Her relationship with Ron is typically superficial; in fact, it is not a love relationship at all, but strictly a formalized game which ends as soon as a better situation manifests itself.
The next question: How does all this social manipulation and mis-education affect the normal sexual impulse in young people? Again, Mead provides us with an interesting and perceptive observation:
… we actually place our young people in a virtually intolerable situation, giving them the entire setting for behavior for which we then punish them whenever it occurs. The curious adjustment that American culture has made to this anomalous situation is petting, a variety of sexual practices that will not result in pregnancy. Technical virginity has become steadily less important, but the prohibition of extramarital pregnancy remains. Petting is the answer to the dilemma. But petting has emotional effects of its own; it requires a very special sort of adjustment in both male and female…
"I thought about Ron and that first night as I relaxed in the bathtub. There had been many other nights since then, and I'd come to love the touch of his flesh against mine, knowing where it was leading. I never got over dreading his big cock, though, but on our second night I'd found a way of avoiding all that.
"'We don't want to get knocked up, do we? Besides, you're too damned big. It hurts,' I objected.
" ‘There's a dozen ways to avoid pregnancy these days, Carole. And as for the other-well, once you loosen up a little it'll stop hurting. And the only way to loosen up is to do it. So… ' He grinned as he countered my arguments.
" ‘I really don't want to, Ron. Besides, we don't have one of those dozen ways with us, do we?'
"His good nature dissolved. 'So what am I supposed to do tonight? Play with myself?'
"But I had already worked that out in my mind. 'Just close your eyes and you'll see, Ron.' I purred. Hoping I'd do as well for him as he had done for me the first time, I lowered my head to his flat belly and tightened my grasp around his swollen cock. Then, after wetting my lips with my tongue, I began to suck his prick into my mouth.
"'Oh, shit!' he moaned, his hands going to my head. 'Oh, wow, Carole! That feels so good!'
"Pleased, I took as much of his huge dick as I could, then slowly forced it back out of my mouth, sucking him back inside me before he'd completely escaped. Every move I made was rewarded by his encouraging groans. I had a feeling talking Ron out of fucking me wouldn't be so difficult any more.
"I'd given Ron my word that I wouldn't get involved with anyone at Chaney, but we'd agreed it was foolish to expect each other not to date. So, with a relatively clear mind I went confidently off to college.
"Chaney was outwardly exactly what I thought it would be, practically down to the last blade.of manicured grass. But the other students threw me. This was the world of money and more money, and while I should have realized that for the most part a plush school like Chaney would be attended by rich kids, I somehow hadn't thought it would make such a difference. I was at the school less than a week when I realized that everything about these people was different-from the food they ate to the sports they liked to the way they got their kicks. The second night there a few of the girls invited me into their room to smoke some pot! I got away with faking a little sophistication, and for the first time in my life I was glad that I was naturally more of a listener than a talker. I'd have put my foot into my mouth a dozen times in that feline bull session.
"Before I retreated to my room, one of the girls, Lorna, asked if I'd go out with a friend of her boyfriend's that weekend. I agreed gratefully, and, with great innocence and an eagerness to be accepted into the social life at school, I prepared for my date.
"My date turned out to have more arms than an octopus and a hell of a lot less charm. When it finally got through to him that I wasn't going to give in, he angrily pulled a good-sized erection from his pants and asked me what he was supposed to do about that.
"Enough to say that I gave him a few suggestions. He deposited me back at the house shortly after that, and along with my irritation and dislike for my date, I was horribly disappointed that my first date had been such a disaster. All my insecurity of my childhood days seemed to return, and a fierce desire to be accepted at any cost blazed in me, to the point that if my date had returned a moment after he left and asked to fuck me I might easily have given in, after all.
