"I was one of those girls who developed late. I was a skinny kid, with too big eyes and spider legs and arms. When the other girls my age were sprouting breasts and hips, I was still flat all over. Then, when I was almost fifteen, I suddenly began to fill out. It happened so fast that I almost felt as if I was looking at myself through one of those speed cameras whenever I looked into a mirror. It was great.
"No one had ever asked me for a date before my sudden change, but I achieved instant popularity afterwards. Maybe other girls would have accepted this changed status easily, but I knew that inside I was still the same girl, and I always felt insecure, and I tried very hard to please, to make up for any deficiencies I might have. Instead of Carole, my name should have been Avis-I tried harder.
"Being popular in my hometown had a lot to do with being an exciting date, and sex was the other word for excitement. There was a fine line drawn between being an exciting date and being a little tramp. Those that fell into the tramp category went out a lot, all right, but they were also something of a joke. The idea was to allow a lot of fooling around, but to keep from actual intercourse. The competition was keen, and most dates turned into wrestling matches at the end. Still, I was so thrilled to be asked out at all I was only too happy to go along with the local games.
"My parents owned a small bookshop in the downtown area of town, and they were pretty busy most of the time. We lived in a nice enough apartment, I guess, and I never really thought about how wealthy people lived except when Grandma would begin to talk about her youth, and how she grew up in a house like the ones in The Gardens. The Gardens are a section of town filled with big estates. It was where the owner of the factories lived, and the doctors, and the owners of the big department stores on First Street. There was a private school over there, and a separate high school, but we never even saw the pampered offspring of those people. They simply didn't exist in our real world. It never occurred to me that going to school at a place like Chancy would be like being plunged into the middle of the protected and manicured hedgework surrounding The Gardens. I doubt if I'd have gone if I'd thought it all out first -here I was, an insecure kid in my own environment, daring to tangle with a whole bunch of kids who lived in a world I knew nothing about.
"Part of the reason I didn't think much about the kind of people I'd run into at Chaney was Ron. I'd begun going out with Ron in my senior year, and from the start Ron was special.
"Until then, I always wondered what it would feel like to fall in love-if I'd know it right away or not. Well, before our first date had ended I knew that I loved Ron, but it wasn't until we'd been going out for nearly a month before I was sure he felt the same. We started going steady just because neither of us was the least bit interested in anyone else.
"Our plan had been to graduate and go to the State college together, until the reading of Grandma's will. Ron was upset when I told him I was going to Chaney instead, but my mind was set. I think deep down that I felt that my life would never be anything other than rather ordinary-I'd marry Ron, we'd have children and enjoy a good life together, but that was all. Like Grandma, I wanted something in the past that I could think back to with joy, something special. Attending a select school like Chaney would be it. Still, I loved Ron, and I didn't want him to be unhappy. So I suggested we go out and celebrate that night.
"'We could go to the lake,' I offered lightly. The lake was actually little more than a large pond, but Ron's family had a small cottage out there. He'd suggested going there more than once. The whole thing was a front for going to bed. Until the night of my inheritance I'd refused. But suddenly I wanted Ron to be as happy as I was- more, I wanted him to be mine in as many ways as possible. I wanted to be sure he'd remember me when I was two states away from him.
"Ron cheered up immediately. 'Do you mean it, Carole?'
"Laughing, I nodded, but my head was filled with the shopping I'd have to do, the plans I had to make.
"The night was especially beautiful, and I enjoyed the ride to the lake. Ron had splurged and bought us dinner at a good steak house, and both of us were feeling pretty good as we pulled up in front of the cottage. Taking care of first things first, he got busy with a fire, and soon the one room cabin was warm.
"Feeling very womanly, I'd told my parents that I was spending the night with a friend. I had my prettiest nightie in a small bag, and I sat staring at the fire while Ron worked at it, my thoughts calm and happy. I felt as if I were starting my life all over again, this time as a pretty, secure young woman. After all, I was going off to an exciting college with a new wardrobe, a college where I could get a new start. And in the background would be Ron, waiting for me, loving me, getting his education for our future.
"Ron took me into his arms, locking his lips to mine. It was a sweet, gentle, loving kiss. 'I can't believe we're really here, Carole. Or that you won't bolt and run away this time.'
"Although he said it with a grin, I knew Ron was still sore deep down because I'd had something of a reputation for being pretty free on my dates, and the one time Ron had attempted to slip his fingers inside my panties I'd pushed him away and walked home. But that, I thought, was one of the highlights of going steady-not having to play sex games all the time. The funny thing was that Ron assumed that it was coldness that made me leave his arms that night.
"I'd have died rather than tell him, but after that night with Ron I'd actually tossed and turned most of the night long with desire, unable to sleep until finally, in desperation, I'd reached under the blanket and played with myself until sweet release finally came. Nearly three years of getting worked up only to force myself to turn off was a drag, yet the desire to 'save myself was almost as strong as the need to retain my 'exciting date' status. That was one of the reasons I'd decided on spending the night with Ron at the cottage-it was time to stop playing games? We belonged to each other, and I had no doubts that after college we would be married.
"I dropped my hand to his lap and pressed softly. 'I promise I won't run…'
"He kissed me again, only this time his lips were hard against mine. His tongue snaked between my lips and filled my mouth.
"I pushed him away, giggling like an excited little girl. 'Why don't you get the bed ready while I get undressed? We have all night, you know.'
"After another quick kiss, Ron let me go. I took my bag and disappeared into the bathroom. I was absolutely relaxed and happy, and I dressed quickly, slipping into my sheer nightie like an eager bride.
"Ron had converted the divan into a double bed and was adjusting the blankets by the time I came out of the bedroom. He just stared at me for a long minute.
"There was a tall mirror on the wall and I glanced into it, as if the look in Ron's eyes wasn't reassuring enough. I looked small and lovely in the mirror, with my long, black hair loose around my shoulders, and the sheer white and rosebud pink nightgown barely covering my curves. My nipples showed through the fabric as a deeper rose color, and the dark triangle of my pubic curls was a deep shadow beneath the gown. I was pleased that my looks affected Ron so strongly. Only the light from the crackling fire illuminated the room.
"Ron held out his arms and I moved into them. We kissed, then he pushed me back on the bed, his eyes never leaving my body. His fingers, shaking slightly, got busy with his own clothing.
"I watched as he removed his things, flushing a little as he finally loosened his pants and dropped them. I'd touched him before, fleetingly, but always through his trousers. Those brief contacts had not been enough to prepare me for the size of him. Oh, I'd seen a number of other males-on those dates before Ron there was always someone trying to impress me by unzipping themselves and pressing their tools into my hand. But Ron was big-and he was stiffly ready even before he was fully unclothed. I looked at that rod of his and hesitated uncertainly. But then Ron was easing into bed next to me and I forgot everything except the reality of his lips on mine.
