ASKING FOR INFORMATION

When you want to find something out about your accommodation, an easy way to ask questions is just to put È…?( Is…? ) before what you want to know. Alternatively, you can simply make your voice go up at the end of the sentence.

Is it…?

Ècaro? Is itexpensive?
Èun hotel moderno? Is ita modern hotel?
Èlontano? Is itfar?
La colazione ècompresa nel prezzo? Isbreakfast included in the price?
Le spese sonocomprese nell’affitto? Arebills included in the rent?

You can use C’è…?in Italian to ask Is there…? and Ci sono…?to ask Are there…?.

Is there…?

C’èun posto per mangiare qualcosa qui vicino? Is thereanywhere near here where we can get something to eat?
C’èun ascensore? Is therea lift?
C’èun balcone? Is therea balcony?
Ci sonotoilettes per dis a bili? Are theredisabled toilets?

Use cerco( I’m looking for ) or cerchiamo( we’re looking for ) to ask where something is. cercocomes from the verb cercare( to look for ).

I’m looking for…

Scusi, cercoil camp e ggio. Excuse me, I’m looking forthe campsite.
Cercouna pensione per stanotte. I’m looking fora B&B for tonight.
Cerchiamol’Hotel Bellini. We’re looking forthe Hotel Bellini.

To get more specific information, you may need to ask Quale…?( What…? ), Dove…?( Where…? ) or A che ora…?( What time…? ).

Qual èl’indirizzo del propriet a rio? What’sthe landlord’s address?
Qual èil n u mero dell’agenzia immobiliare? What’sthe number for the letting agency?

qualeworks for all singular nouns, whether masculine or feminine. It becomes qualbefore a word beginning with a vowel, as in Qual è…?( What’s…? ).

Dov’ è la palestra? Where’s the gym?
Dovesono gli ascensori? Whereare the lifts?
Dovetrovo una presa per il portatile ? Wherecan I plug in my laptop?

What time…?

A che oraè servita la cena? What time’s dinner?
A che orachiudete il portone la sera? What timedo you lock the doors at night?
Entro che orabisogna liberare la stanza? What timedo we have to vacate the room by?
Fino a che oraè servita la colazione? What timedo you serve breakfast till?

How much…?

Quanto vieneuna c a mera d o ppia a notte? How much isa double room per night?
Quanto vienela pensione completa? How much isfull board?
Quanto verrebbeaffittare un appartamento per tutto l u glio? How much would it beto rent an apartment for the whole of July?

How many…?

Quantec a mere con bagno vi sono rimaste? How manyen-suite rooms have you got left?
Quantiletti ci sono nella c a mera famigliare? How manybeds are there in the family room?

ASKING FOR PERMISSION

Often when you are staying in a hotel or other accommodation you will need to be able to ask whether you can do something. Use Posso…?( Can I …?) or Possiamo…?( Can w e…?) to ask if you can do something. These come from the verb potere( to be able ). For more information on potere, see here.

Can I…?

Possovedere la stanza? Can Isee the room?
Possolasciare le val i gie qui per cinque minuti? Can Ileave my suitcases here for five minutes?
Possiamousare la piscina? Can weuse the pool?
Possiamopiantare la tenda qui? Can wecamp here?

You can use Si può…?to ask if something is okay, or possible.
