Supercharge your virtual meetings with evidence-based practices from an award-winning team The shift to virtual meetings was sudden and often traumatic for businesses across all industries as they responded to the global pandemic. Rather than focusing on what worked best, they focused on what worked now . . . which meant closing up the office and being suddenly virtual in nearly every meeting, often without the tools, the training, or the expertise to optimize the new “kitchen table” office. Thankfully, businesses are beginning to be more purposeful in both the tools they use and the approach they take.
This book seeks to be a definitive guide for businesses looking to make their meetings as effective as possible in the ever-evolving “new normal”—leveraging insights from some of the foremost thought leaders in meeting science and on-camera communication.
This book will:
· Highlight new research insights springing from the rapid and exponential adoption of virtual meeting technology
· Discuss the problems, challenges, and pitfalls of meeting in this new modality
· Provide practical, actionable best practices, backed by meeting research that lead to more productive and effective virtual meetings
Perfect for executives, managers, and employees at companies in all industries and of all sizes,
provides practical and actionable best practices that lead to more productive and effective remote meetings.

As the nation responded to the pandemic, “Stay at Home” largely became “Stay on Zoom” with the video meeting app rising to number one on Apple's app store for free videoconferencing options by early April 2020.

Broad usage of personal video chat leads to explosive adoption of video collaboration tools in the workplace, with a variety of platforms being used, often simultaneously, within organizations.

With a shift toward a “webcam‐on” culture, businesses begin to see the benefits of video in virtual meetings – the potential to form deeper connections, less opportunity for participants to multitask, and the ability to read body language to develop a clearer understanding of the intent and impact of messages being conveyed.

Video meetings are enhancing team cohesion, performance, and productivity while also reshaping the way coworkers view each other.

No longer are teammates defined by just their roles; the video portal created by “work from home” provided a fuller picture of their coworkers.

Video is a core component of virtual sales strategy as organizations seek new ways to build relationships, humanize their messages, and take the anonymity out of a sales process that used to rely upon face‐to‐face interactions.

PART TWO The Science of Meetings

Meeting science is a relatively young research area, with the earliest studies that focused on the workplace meeting appearing less than 40 years ago (Schwartzman 1986). And yet so much of our time as employees, managers, and leaders has been and continues to be wrapped up in this activity. In fact, prior to 2020, Joe often referred to the exponential increase in workplace meetings as a “meeting epidemic.” That comparison is probably in poor taste given the experiences of so many in 2020, but the fact remains that we meet more now than ever before, with most workers seeing a 13% increase in their overall meeting load (Bloomberg 2020).

In this section, Joe drives the discussion as he reviews meeting science from before the COVID-19 pandemic and our suddenly virtual world. He provides checklists of counterproductive behaviors and best practices for effective meetings from the “old normal” ( Chapter 3). He then reveals some of the discoveries in meeting science made since early 2020 – when everything changed – with another checklist and a reference guide for best practices for effective virtual meetings based upon the early research ( Chapter 4). Video is an important part of those virtual meetings, but practices more specific to on-camera communication are discussed in Section 3.
