The American College of Veterinary Surgeons Foundation is excited to present Complications in Cranial Cruciate Ligament Surgery in the book series entitled Advances in Veterinary Surgery . Cranial cruciate ligament repair is likely the most common orthopedic surgery performed on dogs and a book dedicated to the complications of the procedures we use is appropriate. My sage mentors taught me that complications are an unfortunate part of surgery and our duty is to own them, manage them to get the best possible outcome for our patients, and learn from them to minimize the chance of future complications. As one of the key missions of the ACVS Foundation is to promote cutting‐edge education for diplomates, this topic is timely and very reflective of the educational mission of the Foundation.
Complications in Cranial Cruciate Ligament Surgery is edited by Drs Ron Ben‐Amotz and David L. Dycus. I'd like to congratulate and thank them for taking on this project. They have chosen a group of strong contributing authors to detail the identification, management, and prevention of complications in cranial cruciate surgery. We are sure you will find this reference extremely valuable.
The ACVS Foundation is an independently chartered philanthropic organization devoted to advancing the educational, scientific, and charitable goals of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. I have tremendous respect and gratitude towards Drs Dycus and Ben‐Amotz for taking on the challenge of putting together this book as a vital resource for veterinarians who want to treat patients and educate clients in the most optimal and comprehensive way possible. While a book project is always daunting, it is relatively easy to write about “when things go right,” but extremely difficult to write about “when things go wrong” as the authors and editors have done for this valuable text. Speaking from experience, the latter is much more important, so I highly recommend that every veterinarian involved in preoperative, intraoperative, and/or postoperative care of dogs being treated for cranial cruciate ligament disease adds this book to their daily‐use library.
