Among the principles that didn’t make the final cut, one of my favorites was this one: “Consciousness caution: There being no consensus, we should avoid strong assumptions as to whether or not advanced AI would possess or require consciousness or feelings.” It went through many iterations, and in the last one, the controversial word “consciousness” was replaced by “subjective experience”—but this principle nonetheless got only 88% approval, just barely falling short of the 90% cutoff.
