“There sat Andy and the faro dealer at a table dividing a two-foot high stack of currency in thousand-dollar packages.

“ ‘Correct,’ says Andy. ‘Thirty-one thousand apiece. Come in, Jeff,’ says he. ‘This is our share of the profits of the first half of the scholastic term of the World’s University, incorporated and philanthropated.

Are you convinced now(теперь ты убежден) ,’ says Andy, ‘that philanthropy when practiced in a business way(что филантропия, когда она осуществляется в коммерческом ключе) is an art that blesses him who gives as well as him who receives(есть искусство, которое делает счастливым того, кто дает, так же как и того, кто получает; to bless – благословлять; одаривать /кого-л. чем-л./; делать счастливым ) ?’

“ ‘Great(отлично) !’ says I. ‘I’ll be ready(я буду готов) . “ ‘That’ll be easy,’ says Andy, turning around to the faro dealer.

“ ‘Jim,’ says Andy, ‘shake hands with Mr. Peters.’ ”

“As I have told you before(как я вам /уже/ рассказывал раньше; to tell – говорить, рассказывать ) ,” said Jeff Peters, “I never had much confidence in the perfidiousness of woman(я никогда не имел много уверенности в коварстве женщины = женское коварство никогда не внушало мне большого доверия; perfidious – вероломный, коварный; perfidy – вероломство, измена ) . “They deserve the compliment(они заслуживают этот комплимент) ,” said I. “I think they are entitled to be called the honest sex(думаю, они имеют полное право называться честным полом; to be entitled to – иметь право, быть уполномоченным; to entitle – давать право; озаглавливать; title – заглавие, название; право /на что-л./ ) .”

“Why shouldn’t they be(а почему бы им не быть /честными/) ?” said Jeff. “They’ve got the other sex either grafting or working overtime for ’em(у них есть противоположный пол, либо жульничающий для них, либо работающий на них сверхурочно; other – другой, иной; второй /из двух, трех/; другой, противоположный ) .
