A young man approached, limping, wearing a thick short coat and knee-breeches(подошел молодой человек, прихрамывая, на нем было толстое короткое пальто = полупальто и бриджи; to approach – подходить, приближаться; knee – колено ) . He was Danish-looking, broad at the loins(он был похож на датчанина, широкий в кости; loins – поясница ).

“I’s come back, then,” said the father to the son(он вернулся, вот, – сказал отец сыну; I’s = it`s ) – “leastwise, he’s bin browt back, flyed ower the Griff Low( = leastwise, he’s been brought back, flown over the Griff Low – по крайней мере, его принесли назад, перелетевшего через Грифф-Лоу) .”

The son looked at me(сын посмотрел на меня) . He had a devil-may-care bearing(держался он так, будто сам черт ему не брат; devil-may-care: «дьявол может тревожиться» – беззаботный, беспечный; бесшабашный ) , his cap on one side(шапка на боку; cap – шапка; кепка; фуражка ) , his hands stuck in the front pockets of his breeches(руки засунуты в передние карманы бриджей) . Then he turned again to the group.

“Get up, then, Maggie, lass, get up wi’ thee. Tha ma’es too much o’ th’ bod.”

The son looked at me. He had a devil-may-care bearing, his cap on one side, his hands stuck in the front pockets of his breeches. But he said nothing.

“Shall you come in a minute, Master?” said the elderly woman, to me(не зайдете ли на минутку, сударь? – сказала старуха мне; master – хозяин, владелец; господин; /уст./ мистер, господин ).

“Ay, come in an’ ha’e a cup o’ tea or summat( = Yes, come in and have a cup of tea or something – да, заходите и выпейте чашку чая или чего еще) . So we went indoors, into the rather stuffy, overcrowded living-room(и мы вошли в дом, в довольно душную, забитую гостиную; to overcrowd – переполнять /людьми/; crowd – толпа ) , that was too cosy and too warm(которая была слишком уютной и слишком теплой) . The son followed last, standing in the doorway(сын пошел последним, остановившись в дверях) . The father talked to me(отец заговорил со мной) . Maggie put out the tea-cups(Мэгги достала чашки) . The mother went into the dairy again(мать снова пошла в маслодельню).

“Tha’lt rouse thysen up a bit again now, Maggie,” the father-in-law said(теперь ты снова немножко встряхнешься, Мэгги, – сказал свекор; Tha’lt rouse thysen up = You will rouse yourself up ) – and then to me(а потом мне) : “’Er’s not bin very bright sin’ Alfred come whoam, an’ the bod flyed awee( = She`s not been very bright since Alfred came home, and the bird flew away – она не очень-то весела с тех пор, как Альфред приехал домой, еще и птица улетела; bright – яркий; блестящий; веселый, радостный ).

“Shall you come in a minute, Master?” said the elderly woman, to me.

“Ay, come in an’ ha’e a cup o’ tea or summat. You’ll do wi’ summat, carryin’ that bod. Come on, Maggie wench, let’s go in.”

So we went indoors, into the rather stuffy, overcrowded living-room, that was too cosy and too warm. The son followed last, standing in the doorway. The father talked to me. Maggie put out the tea-cups. The mother went into the dairy again.

“Tha’lt rouse thysen up a bit again now, Maggie,” the father-in-law said – and then to me: “’Er’s not bin very bright sin’ Alfred come whoam, an’ the bod flyed awee.

’E come whoam a Wednesday night, Alfred did( = He came home on Wednesday night – он приехал в среду вечером, Альфред-то; night – ночь; вечер ) . But ay, you knowed, didna yer( = But yes, you knew, didn`t you – ах да, вы знали, не так ли) . Ay, ’e comed ’a Wednesday( = Yes, he came on Wednesday – да, приехал он в среду) – an’ I reckon there wor a bit of a to-do between ’em, worn’t there, Maggie(= and I reckon there was a bit of a to-do between them, wasn’t there, Maggie – и, полагаю, между ними случилась небольшая размолвка, так ведь, Мэгги; to-do – /разг./ суматоха, суета, шум; ссора ) ?”

He twinkled maliciously to his daughter-in-law(он ехидно подмигнул невестке; maliciously – злобно, со злобой ) , who was flushed brilliant and handsome(которая вспыхнула, сверкающая и красивая).

“Oh, be quiet, father(ох, помолчите, отец) .
