Высказывались предположения о том, что у богатых есть некие генетические отличия, которые определяют отсутствие сострадания, делают их бездушными социопатами. Но факты этого не подтверждают. В нашей лаборатории мы выявили ген, связанный с повышенной выработкой окситоцина в нервной системе, химического вещества, которое усиливает такие качества, как забота о других, эмпатия, щедрость. Гипотеза, что у богатых и влиятельных людей этот ген отсутствует и они биологически предрасположены к отсутствию сострадания, выглядела очень соблазнительной. Но наше исследование не обнаружило никакой связи между положением в обществе и наличием гена, влияющего на выработку окситоцина.
