Сейчас ведьмы – символ самоидентификации Варбойс. Колдунья в конусообразной шляпе и на метле стала городским логотипом. Она крутится на шпиле часовой башни в центре поселка. Она же на значке местной средней школы [205] См.: Totem 1993. P. 1, 56. . Она на кружках, на тетрадках, на брелоках вперемешку с Гарри Поттером. Туристы расхватывают сувениры. Экскурсоводы и краеведы гордо извещают, что это случилось именно здесь. Встречаются и те, кто, изрядно исковеркав материал, излагают легенду о красавицах-ведуньях, которых затравили завистливые соседи [206] См. например: Marlowe 1926. P. 149–168. . Местный старожил Гарольд Шелтон выпустил в 1998 г. туристический буклет с подзаголовком «от ведьм до крыльев», где на титульном листе перечислил основные события в истории городка: «ведьмы, великий пожар 1900 г., депрессия 1930-х гг., 156-я тренировочная авиаэскадрилья…» [207] Shelton 1998. . Именно в такой последовательности. Судилище над Сэмуэлами – не просто главное, но единственное важное событие за тысячу лет. На первых страницах краткий рассказ о самом процессе, а потом фотография их дома, недавно снесенного при строительстве гаража. До последнего он считался жилищем колдуньи. В отличие от него, манор-хаус в Варбойс, пусть перестроенный, стоит на месте. Рядом сохранилась та же церковь, как и в Хантингдоне, как и в Эллингтоне. Поколения Трокмортонов расселились по всему свету. Один из американских потомков в 1930 г. издал биографию фамилии, где сухо отметил и варбойские события, воспроизвел обложку книги о ведьмах. Теперь это элемент семейного сказания, яркая средневековая открытка, страшная сказка – одна из легенд Болотного края.
