Белые костюмы, туфли на платформе, стробоскопические лампы… Я почувствовал приближение эпохи диско в тот момент, когда владелец студии в Западном Орандже, Нью-Джерси, навел меня на группу под названием Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band.

Это была даже не группа, а целый карнавал – десяток подростков с улиц Бронкса, выросших там и впитавших звучание и стиль своих районов. Там смешались латиноамериканские, негритянские и поп-традиции, образовав столь уникальное сочетание звука и визуальных эффектов, что я прежде никогда ничего похожего не видел. Музыка создавала только половину эффекта – наблюдать за ними было все равно что смотреть фильмы Басби Беркли в 40-х.

Костюмы группы даже не были сценическими – они так и по улице ходили. Один из лидеров группы, Август Дарнелл, ни на миг не расставался со своим одеянием в стиле зут. Вероятно, он даже спал в нем. Прочие парни щеголяли в мешковатых штанах и старых кепках. Кори Дэй, ведущая вокалистка, предпочитала платья в духе 40-50-х годов. Каждый из них сжился со своей ролью и никогда не выходил из образа. Стопроцентно натуральный продукт. Если бы эти ребята побольше думали о будущем, а не кинулись спиваться сразу же после первых лучиков успеха, то, вероятно, они стали бы одним из величайших коллективов в истории. Больше того, многие из них в таком случае были бы сейчас живы.

Впервые я увидел членов группы, когда был в компании Сэнди Линцера, с которым мы подружились во время работы над моей второй записью в качестве Т. Д. Валентина. Мы были поражены, узнав, что Savannah Band была до того отвергнута уже четырьмя или пятью студиями. Зато, когда мы поняли, с чем имеем дело, мы понимающе переглянулись и сразу поняли: если мы сможем записать их и грамотно продвинуть, то у нас получится суперколлектив!
