One hundred years after Austrian satirist Karl Kraus began writing his dramatic masterpiece, remains as powerfully relevant as the day it was first published. Kraus’s play enacts the tragic trajectory of the First World War, when mankind raced toward self-destruction by methods of modern warfare while extolling the glory and ignoring the horror of an allegedly “defensive” war. This volume is the first to present a complete English translation of Kraus’s towering work, filling a major gap in the availability of Viennese literature from the era of the War to End All Wars. Bertolt Brecht hailed as the masterpiece of Viennese modernism. In the apocalyptic drama Kraus constructs a textual collage, blending actual quotations from the Austrian army’s call to arms, people’s responses, political speeches, newspaper editorials, and a range of other sources. Seasoning the drama with comic invention and satirical verse, Kraus reveals how bungled diplomacy, greedy profiteers, Big Business complicity, gullible newsreaders, and, above all, the sloganizing of the press brought down the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the dramatization of sensationalized news reports, inurement to atrocities, and openness to war as remedy, today’s readers will hear the echo of the fateful voices Kraus recorded as his homeland descended into self-destruction.

TYROLESE CASUALTIES (highlighted in I, 16). These included the Tiroler Landsturm Nr. 2, decimated at the battle of →Lemberg in September 1914 under the command of →Auffenberg. The Landsturm were poorly trained territorials, ill-equipped for modern warfare. Advancing over open ground in their blue-grey uniforms, they were mown down by Russian machine guns. The survivors suffered a second defeat when the fortress of →Przemysl was captured by the Russians in March 1915, after which the regiment was disbanded (see the regimental history by Otto Stolz). Heavy casualties were also suffered by another Tyrolese regiment, the →Imperial Rifles (Kaiserjäger), under the command of →Ludwig von Fabini. His disregard for the lives of those serving under him, first on the Russian and later on the Italian Front, earned him the nickname Kaiserjägertod (IV, 11): 236f, 338f.

U-BOAT. Unrestricted submarine warfare declared by Germany (4 February 1915) as novel strategic response to Entente’s trade blockade of North Sea; discontinued on account of American outrage at sinking of → Lusitania and Arabic (September 1915); resumed February 1916 until May 1916 (→Jutland); resumed January 1917, leading to entry of United States into war (6 April 1917), climax of U-boat activity countered by introduction of convoy system: 159, 176, 193f, 228f, 247, 262, 266, 287f, 295, 298, 318f, 328, 352, 373, 402, 501f, 521, 544, 547.
