В такого рода сочетаниях всегда присутствует значение обстоятельства образа действия (каким образом?). Это лишний раз свидетельствует о спаянности в английском сказуемом значений действия и обстоятельств действия.

В английском языке существуют даже глаголы с адвербиальным значением, т. е. такие глаголы, которые содержат в себе не только значение действия, но и характеристику этого действия. [5] См. Т. Р. Левицкая, А. М. Фитерман. Глаголы адвербиального значения и их перевод на русский язык. «Тетради переводчика», № 2, М., «Международные отношения», 1964.

Они образуют синонимические ряды, например, глаголы видения:

to frown – взглянуть исподлобья, глядеть хмурясь to scowl – сердито смотреть

to stare – смотреть пристально, с изумлением уставиться to smile – с улыбкой взглянуть на кого-л. to smirk – смотреть с самодовольной, деланной или глупой улыбкой

to grin – смотреть с ухмылкой to squint – смотреть искоса, украдкой to snub – смотреть свысока, с презрением и т. д. [6] Примеры взяты с сокращениями из статьи Ю. Как видим, такие глаголы переводятся на русский язык, как правило, не одним словом, а сочетанием слов.

Кроме того, в английском языке есть глаголы с адвербиальным значением, которые не образуют синонимических рядов, но которые благодаря заключенному в них обстоятельственному значению способствуют сжатости и образности высказывания. [7] См. Т. Р. Левицкая, А. М. Фитерман. Проблемы перевода, с. 40. Часто значение таких глаголов проявляется только в контексте предложения: какое именно действие произвело лицо или предмет становится ясно из сочетания данного глагола с последующим обстоятельством, дополнением или послелогом. Например:

The trees vanished and suddenly they were roaring downhill between snow-draped fields. Деревья исчезли, и вдруг они с ревом понеслись под гору между заснеженными полями.

Не shuffled himself into a heavy coat. Он кое-как натянул пальто.

The snake hissed away. Змея с шипением уползла.

Все это говорит о тесной спаянности сказуемого с обстоятельством образа действия в английском языке.

I. А. Переведите на русский язык. Обратите внимание на место отрицаний и наречия only в предложении.

1. We haven’t come to disturb you, darling. 2. One’s only young once. 3. He wasn’t born in Overton. 4. I don’t go to the cinema to learn things. 5. I only want to love once – you. 6. They only seem to have volume four. 7. The schooner showed no light, and the doctor only saw it in the darkness because he knew that it was there. 8. I knew he was only staying a day or two. 9. In this backwater of life we don’t often have visitors. 10. Larry eats very little and I don’t believe he notices what he eats. 11. The answer to that is that everyone doesn’t feel like me. 12. We don’t move in the same circles. 13. It’s uncle Elliott’s best and he only gives it to very special guests. 14. I’m only here for a very short time. 15. And he didn’t paint it very badly. 16. I’ll only be a moment. 17. All the interesting people don’t live in the neighbourhood of the Arc de Triomphe and the Avenue Foch. In fact few interesting people do, because interesting people generally don’t have a lot of money. 18. She only had one failure. 19. I don’t suppose I had seen her a dozen times. 20. The night was stormy and the wind blew cold from the mountains. 9. The jungle grew thick to the bank of a broad river. 10. She married young. 11. He came to socialism young. 12. The water was foaming white. 13. The red earth gleamed white as eiderdown in the sun – cotton, acres and acres of cotton!
