CHAPTER 5
Donald Trump Won. Is America Now Safe?
It is clear that when General Mike Flynn described the election of November 8, 2016, as a peaceful “political revolution,” he was absolutely right. The day America chose Donald J. Trump, a man who had never held political office before, to hold the most powerful position in the land, politics in the republic changed irrevocably.
We should remind ourselves of the situation then. The Democrats had a candidate who virtually owned the mainstream media: on the night of the election, the New York Times declared that Hillary Clinton had a greater than ninety percent chance of winning the presidency. She had spent $1.4 billion on a campaign in which she made it clear that she was entitled to become president because of her sex and last name. Nevertheless, a real estate magnate and reality television star defeated her.
How did that happen, and what does this mean for the future of conservative ideas? The answers to these weighty questions are not always clear. Donald J. Trump defeated more than a dozen establishment Republicans for the nomination, yet since becoming president, he has implemented policy after policy that would please the most traditional Reaganite conservative. Are we therefore safer? Are we better prepared to deter, and if necessary defeat, our adversaries? Can we finally push back on the political correctness that has hobbled us for decades? These are the most important questions we face today.
I have given hundreds of interviews over the years. Most are quite brief, frequently no more than three minutes. It is challenging, to say the least, to tackle large and strategically important issues when all you have is two hundred or so seconds! There are places, however, where one can really get into the substance of an issue or even open up in a more personal way about how one sees the world and thus provide deeper insight into the threats we face. One such platform is John Batchelor’s radio show out of New York, an absolute favorite of mine, where I have been a regular guest on Thursday nights for almost a decade now. A show where the host has discussions with his guests that last for half an hour, sometimes a full hour. Similarly, Larry Elder’s show and Dennis Prager’s, and the rest of the faculty who have truly substantive programs on the Salem Radio Network.
But the most satisfying, meaningful, and personal interview I have had of late was with Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report . A former progressive, Dave calls himself a “classical liberal” with libertarian leanings. He has amassed a large following on YouTube and for his podcasts, in part, as far as I am concerned, because of his fairness, humble inquisitiveness, and natural ability to make his subjects open up on camera. [1] And for the complete catalogue of Dave’s excellent interviews, go to: https://www.rubinreport.com
He and I first met at a Turning Point USA [2] Turning Point USA is an incredibly worthy national organization run by the indefatigable Charlie Kirk which promotes the message of limited government and free market on America’s college campus. conference where I spoke on my time in the White House, the national security vision of the president, and the undying bond between America and the nation of Israel. Soon thereafter, I sat down with him for more than an hour to discuss the key issues covered in this book and to share my views on the significance of our nation’s choice of Donald J. Trump as president, his role in America’s rediscovery of herself, the rise of an utterly intolerant left, and the future of conservative thought.
Dave, who has an uncanny ability to focus an interview on the truly important issues, has graciously allowed me to reproduce our discussion for this book. It should provide you with confidence about our choice, a sense of security about our present, and a lasting sense of hope for our shared future.

Dave:We have already spent a good amount of time talking about Star Wars .
Sebastian Gorka:Yes, I was very impressed, your green room and that poster. I’d never seen that McQuarrie poster before.
Dave:That was the original 1977 poster. I wonder, do you think, because we’re obviously here talking about national security and foreign policy and all that, do you think any of your thoughts related to foreign policy have anything to do with Star Wars ? Because I do think at some level, some of the way I view the world has to do with some of the lore and all.
Sebastian Gorka:I’m not sure it’s cause and effect, but absolutely in terms of good and evil. I mean totally. The first three movies are about good versus evil before they become this social justice warrior absurdity. So yeah, sure, but as much as being the son of people who lived under Nazi and then communist dictatorship; these things kind of flow together.

Dave:All right so you were in California because you were talking to a couple conservative groups here in California. People don’t believe that conservative groups could exist in California.
Sebastian Gorka:I don’t live here, but I come in and out to do these events. Something is happening. Something is clearly happening. The energy I felt at the events here is like the energy I feel at events in Virginia or elsewhere, like Texas. And there’s a commonality whoever you speak to, they keep mentioning the same things. They talk about the gas tax; they talk about sanctuary cities; they talk about the burden on businesses. When you get these things repeated enough times, you realize something is happening in California. Who knows where it will go but this isn’t the state I used to call the “people’s republic.” I’m not so sure anymore.
Dave:Really? So do you think this could be something that could happen as soon as our next gubernatorial election that’s coming up now? Or do you think that this is sort of long term maybe presidential election 2020 or …?
Sebastian Gorka:All I’ll say is the following: with the election of Donald J. Trump to president, the political rulebook has been shredded, burnt, buried, and then Donald Trump jumped up and down on it. It’s gone, so any past expectations, any trend-lines are irrelevant. I mean, I traveled with the president, we flew on Air Force One to Youngstown, Ohio, back in June, and this is Steel Valley, right? This is the heart of the blue-collar, Democrat, manual laborers. We arrived at the stadium and the president was in the back. I was doing selfies with the crowd ….
Dave:You do love the crowd selfie. I have seen many crowd selfies with you.
Sebastian Gorka:Look! What does it cost me? They want a selfie? Yeah, sure, why not? So, I got to engage with these people, and I realized that in the stadium alone, twenty to twenty-five thousand people, everybody was either a former registered Democrat, or their parents, their grandparents were all Democrats. And then what happens when the president, when the First Lady Melania comes out on the stage? It erupts. The building erupts with chants of “USA! Drain the swamp!” And this is Democrat territory. Now if that can happen in Youngstown, Ohio, who knows what can happen in California?
Dave:Yeah, so I want to talk a little bit about your history and your parents and growing up that you just mentioned, but as long as we’re on the first part of the Trump portion of this, let’s just keep doing that. I heard you at the Turning Point USA event in December give a speech which was really wonderful, and you described Trump as the “icebreaker.” And what I’ve been saying around here is that I view him as the bull in the china shop. We wanted a panther to knock over a few things, but we got the bull. I think that really is the same analogy that we’re using there. So could you further expand on …
