Так как для задуманного мной масштабного труда по алхимической иконографии не хватало ни источников, ни научной литературы, в их поиске я уехал из России — сначала в Барселону по аспирантской программе Erasmus+, а затем в Германию, где благодаря поддержке немецкого исторического института в Москве и краткосрочной стипендии от фонда DAAD мог предаваться своим исследованиям на протяжении долгого времени, до тех пор, пока меня не пригласил работать в библиотеку нижнесаксонского города Вольфенбюттеля историк искусства Штефан Лаубе. Два года под его руководством я занимался составлением базы алхимической иконографии — находил, описывал и анализировал все известные на сегодня алхимические фронтисписы, а также аллегорические изображения, посвященные теме колб, заключающих в себе людей, животных и химические реагенты. Мои познания в иконографии постоянно расширялись, в т. ч. благодаря сотрудничеству с замечательными историками, Михаилом Майзульсом и Дильшат Харман, итогом которого стала наша совместная книга «Страдающее Средневековье», отмеченная премиями и обласканная критиками. После ее издания и окончания проекта в Вольфенбюттеле я продолжил исследования для будущего труда по алхимии в библиотеке Готы под эгидой Fritz Thyssen Stiftung, а затем в университете Гумбольдта в Берлине при поддержке Stiftung des Abgeordneten Hauses.
