ЗАДАВАЙТЕ ВОПРОСЫ. Вам привычно задавать вопросы насчет конфликта интересов в связи с финансированием промышленными корпорациями. Но вы также должны спрашивать о конфликте интересов в связи с краткосрочными грантами или трудоустройством. Не зависит ли дальнейшее финансирование ученого от получения результатов, о которых он вам только что рассказал?

Точно так же вам следует спрашивать, не зависят ли шансы ученого на продолжение своего исследования от популярности его работы среди коллег. Обеспечивает ли его нынешняя позиция должную защиту от социального давления?

И наконец, точно так же, как вы привыкли испытующе смотреть на статистические данные, вам следует задавать вопрос, предприняли ли ученые какие-то шаги, чтобы противостоять когнитивным искажениям. Озаботились ли всесторонним освещением преимуществ и недостатков работы? Или же просто прорекламировали собственное исследование?

Вы обнаружите, что почти для всех исследований в основаниях физики ответ по меньшей мере на один из перечисленных вопросов будет разочаровывающим. А значит, доверять выводам этих ученых нельзя. Прискорбно, но факт.
