Chapter 1

The Time Traveller and his friends are talking. They are talking about time and travelling. Time Traveller tells his friends that people can travel in time. His friends don’t believe 1 1 believe – [bɪˈliːv] – верить him. Time Traveller wants to prove 2 2 prove – [pruːv] – доказать that people can really travel in time. He tells he has something that can help.

They are going to another room where they see a strange machine 3 3 machine – [məˈʃiːn] – машина, оборудование . His friends are looking at it and they don’t believe 4 4 believe – [bɪˈliːv] – верить it can travel in time.

Some days later all the friends are coming to the Time Traveller again. But he is not in his house. They find a message. “Ask for dinner at seven o’clock. I will come later and explain 5 5 explain – [ɪkˈspleɪn] – объяснять everything.”

The friends are having dinner and talking about the Time Traveller. Where is he? Maybe he is travelling in time? The door opens and the Time Traveller comes in.

“What is it?” asks one friend.

The Time Traveller is dirty and very tired. He has a cut 6 6 cut – [kʌt] – порез on his face. He goes to his room and then comes back in clean clothes.

The men in the room all ask about travelling in time. But the Time Traveller wants to eat and drink.

"Sorry, I was very hungry," he says. "I am ready to tell my story now."

And he starts his story.

Chapter 2

I finished my time machine and then I wanted to try it. I sat in it. I pushed 7 7 push – [pʊʃ] – толкать, нажимать the lever 8 8 lever – [levər] – рычаг a little and looked at the clock. I travelled five hours in the future. Then I pushedthe levermore and I saw night, then day again, then night again, faster and faster. I stopped the lever.

I sat in flowers. It was rainy and I was wet 9 9 wet – [wet] – мокрый . There was a big monument of sphinx near me and my time machine. I also saw some white creatures 10 10 creature – [ˈkriːtʃər] – создание, живое существо .They had rich clothes and they looked at me.

The strange creatures came to me. They said something but it wasn't English. They touched 11 11 touch – [tʌtʃ] – касаться my hand – they were so soft 12 12 soft – [sɒft] – мягкий ! They had big eyes, small mouths and were smaller than normal people. They smiled at me.

Maybe they were fools? But it was 802 701 year and I thought people or creatures 13 13 creature – [ˈkriːtʃər] – создание, живое существо would be very clever in this future.

The creaturestook me to their house. We all sat and they started eating fruits. There was a big room and around 200 creatures were in it. They all looked at me with interest.

After we ate, I tried to teach 14 14 teach – [tiːtʃ] – научить them English. They said words after me, but then they became very tired 15 15 tired – [ˈtaɪəd] – уставший . I decided 16 16 decide – [dɪˈsaɪd] – решить that our lessons should be very short because these creatures were very lazy and they got tired very fast.

Soon I understood that these people of future were alike 17 17 alike – [əˈlaɪk] – похожи . Men and women were aliketoo. And they were weak 18 18 weak – [wiːk] – слабый . They had an easy life, there was no need to be strong. The fruits were better and bigger. There weren't any dangerous animals and nobody was ill. They also didn't work.

Exercise 1. Choose the right word.

4) I work sixteen hours every day, of course I am always tired/tried.

Chapter 3

One night I came outside. I looked at the moon. But then I looked at the sphinx and saw that my time machine wasn't there. I was scared 19 19 scared – [skeəd] – напуган . I started running to the sphinx. I thought, "Maybe they moved it behind the trees…" No, the time machine wasn't there.
