ПОМОЩНИК РЕЖИССЕРА. Всегда остается шанс — я понимаю, как глупо это звучит, но, возможно, в этих словах есть доля правды. События могут принять иное направление. Кто-нибудь найдет лекарство. Сила, заставляющая зомби выходить из могил, перестанет действовать. Пара недель мороза может значительно уменьшить их ряды. А может быть, найдется человек, устойчивый к их укусам, к инфекции. Ведь на планете шесть с лишним миллиардов человек, так что один из них вполне может оказаться таким исключением…

БИЛЛИ ДЖО. И ты веришь во всю эту фигню?

ПОМОЩНИК РЕЖИССЕРА. Нет.

БИЛЛИ ДЖО. Ясно.

Он уходит.

ПОМОЩНИК РЕЖИССЕРА. Понимаете, не то чтобы я не хотел верить. Я хочу верить во все это. Во всю эту фигню, как выразился мой юный друг. Но поверить в это уже даже не трудно, а просто невозможно. Нет, это… это… я боюсь, что это закат человечества. Становится очевидно, что Homo sapiens sapiens покидает сцену в зубах неумирающих. Если бы не столько боли и страданий, во всем этом можно было бы увидеть смешное. Вот вам и конец света: ни взрыва, ни плача — просто отвратительное чавканье, как в дешевых фильмах ужасов.

ПОМОЩНИК РЕЖИССЕРА берет свой фонарь, выключает его и сует в карман; поднимается и уходит в глубину сцены. Его фигура на миг выделяется на фоне черного ивового куста, затем он исчезает среди теней. В зрительном зале зажигается свет; проходы между рядами по-прежнему полны мертвецов. Мужчины, женщины, молодые, старые, все несущие на себе признаки распада, — они окружают зрителей, не двигаясь с места.
