“I don't know that either of ye could keep a wife!” Though neither said a word their looks and bearing expressed distinct dissent. Mrs. Trefusis went on:

Abel broke the silence(Абель нарушил молчание):

“It don't seem the square thing to toss for the girl(это не кажется честной вещью = по-моему, нечестно кидать жребий на девушку) ! She wouldn't like it herself(ей бы самой это не понравилось) , and it doesn't seem – seem respectful like to her(и это не… неуважительно по отношению к ней…; respectful – почтительный; вежливый; respect – уважение, почтение ) —” Eric interrupted(Эрик прервал /его/) . He was conscious that his chance was not so good as Abel's(он понимал, что у него будет меньше шансов, чем у Абеля: «его шанс не такой хороший»; conscious – сознающий, понимающий ) , in case Sarah should wish to choose between them(в случае если Сара захочет выбирать между ними).

“Are ye afraid of the hazard(ты боишься рискнуть; hazard – риск, опасность ) ?”

“Not me!” said Abel, boldly(ничуть: «/только/ не я»! – смело ответил Абель) . Mrs. Trefusis, seeing that her idea was beginning to work, followed up the advantage(миссис Трефьюзис, видя, что ее план начинает работать, стремительно пошла к цели; to follow up – упорно /пре/следовать; доводить до конца; to follow up an advantage – /воен./ развивать успех ).
