Hello beautiful. I am Popeye.
In 1998 I met Jhon Jairo Velásquez Vásquez—alias «Popeye»—lieutenant to the Medellín Cartel's leader, Pablo Escobar Gaviria. Our first encounter was at the high security yard of the Modelo Prison in Bogotá, Colombia.
I visited the prison frequently as a journalist for RCN TV. I was always conducting interviews and speaking to the inmates, uncovering news about what was really happening inside the prison. At that time, stories about confrontations between guerrilla and paramilitary factions were everyday news. You could often hear shots inside the prison as the different sides fought for control.
I had always wanted to meet one of the members of the Medellín Cartel. I was curious to know who they were, what they looked like, and what these men, who belonged to the most powerful drug cartel that has ever existed in Colombia, were thinking. At the high security yard I was able to talk with two of them. The most notorious was Jhon Jairo Velásquez Vásquez.
"Hello beautiful. I am Popeye." The man who sat in front of me stared at me. His pale skin reflected the six years he had been in prison; in fact, it looked as if he had never once stepped outside. Popeye smiled at me with curiosity while his cold eyes examined me from head to toe. We were introduced by another inmate, Ángel Gaitán Mahecha, a man accused of paramilitarism and homicide.
My first impression was surprise and curiosity; I also examined him from head to toe. He wasn't quite six feet tall. His slim body and the smile on his face almost put me at ease. I thought this man couldn't possibly frighten anyone, and yet I couldn't forget the number of homicides in which he had been involved. I wanted to see into the mind of the man who planned and participated in the most horrible homicides that the cartel had carried out in their war against the state.

Rollo paid for his imprudence with a rifle shot. The first shot ripped off his right shoulder and the second broke his head in two pieces. The prostitutes were taken out of the hacienda by Paskin. The blonde, without saying goodbye and without looking back, left first. She knew she had something to do with the tragedy.

Pablo ordered Chopo to take Carlos Lehder to El Patrón’s hiding place in eastern Antioquia and to give him some bodyguards for protection. Since Lehder had his own group of killers in the San Pío de Itagüí District, he refused Pablo’s men, but accepted the hideout and two cars.

Chopo accompanied him up to a little farm near Guarne. He left Lehder the two cars and considered his mission accomplished. Orejitas and I, along with the hearse, made our way towards Itagüí to the Rincón District to take the lifeless body of our friend to his family. After three and a half hours, we arrived a block away from Rollo’s mother’s house. I asked Orejitas to come with me. The hearse waited for our signal. We walked towards the house I used to visit with Rollo. The door was open. The deceased’s mother was having a cheerful chat with her neighbors, accompanied by two of Rollo’s sisters. The old lady saw me and without saying hello, said at once, as if she knew what had happened, “No, not Rollo.”

She looked at me, waiting for me to confirm her suspicions. I nodded. She burst into tears and fainted. One of her daughters helped her up. The neighbors looked at her, astonished, no clue what had happened. I stood in the door and signaled the hearse to drive up.

When the hearse pulled up, the impact of what had just happened grew even stronger for Rollo’s family. When I had invited him up to the hacienda, his mother had said goodbye with prayers, and when she saw me come with Orejitas, her mother’s heart sensed the news. After a short gathering to give our condolences, we explained what had happened to our partner. We paid the hearse driver and looked for a cab. On our way, I asked Orejitas, “Did you notice he didn’t have his scapular?”

On November 15, 1984, Hernán Botero was extradited. Alberto and Nayib Pabón Jatter, along with Marco Fidel Cadavid, became the first extraditable Colombians to the U.S. Hernán Botero was the owner of the Nutibara Hotel in Medellín, and the charge, which at that time was not a crime in Colombia, was money laundering.

This statement has been confirmed by Popeye, and obviously must be from the period before the taking, a time of friendship between Ospina and Escobar.

30

Popeye confirmed that this money was paid to Iván Marino Ospina, having been handed over by Pinina as described. Pinina also showed Popeye the house to which he delivered the money hidden in the car. This money, requested to finance the taking, was obviously delivered before his death. The preparations for the operation took several months and that’s why he could have received it in spite of having died three months before the siege on the palace. Popeye is certain of this, and states that the Medellín Cartel’s accounts indicate this payment to the M-19 was received by Iván Marino Ospina. Editor’s note: The additional five million that Escobar offered was not paid, or at least Popeye has no knowledge of it; there is no indication of the transaction on the Medellín Cartel’s accounts.
