Born Roland Loomis in 1930, Fakir was born a depression baby in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He studied electrical engineering and has a B.S.E. degree from Northern State University (South Dakota), plus an M.A. degree in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. For many years he held executive positions in San Francisco advertising agencies and operated his own agency where he specialized in high-tech advertising and marketing for Silicon Valley industries. Currently, Fakir is a popular speaker at universities, colleges and to special interest groups. He is Director of the Insight Institute and publishes unusual books and periodicals as Insight Books. In addition, he conducts workshops on Ecstatic Shamanism and offers private shamanic journeys, body piercings, or brandings in a ritual context. Fakir also likes to do ritual performance in galleries and theaters. He is married to French-born Carla who is also a collaborator in his workshops and performances.
JOAN A. NELSON, M.A. (PSY.), ED.D. (Human Sexuality), is a sex educator and clinical sexologist in private practice in San Francisco. Her published research attempts to describe the phenomenon of intergenerational sexuality—including nonproblematic as well as problematic relationships. Ms. Nelson’s relevant publications include: “The impact of incest: factors in self-evaluation,” a chapter in the book Childhood Sexuality, New Findings/New Perspectives (1981); “A new look at incest,” Forum Magazine (Aug. 1980); “Incest: self-report findings from a nonclinical sample,” The Journal of Sex Research (Nov. 1986); “Fear of sexual intimacy: an integrative clinical approach emphasizing learned inhibition as an etiological factor,” Journal of Sex Education and Therapy (Vol. 13, 1987); and “Intergenerational sexual contact: a continuum model of participants and experiences,” Journal of Sex Education and Therapy (Vol. 15, 1989).
MICHAEL PERRY, PH.D. is a licensed therapist with a private practice in Encino, California. He specializes in sexual concern therapy, relationship counseling and surrogate therapy, has a number of teaching credentials and is Board Certified by the American College of Sexologists. He is past president of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex, Los Angeles Chapter, and now serves on the National Board. He produces audio and video programs on sexuality. Michael’s most recent project, Sex: A Lifelong Pleasure is a complete sexual self-help video series now in international distribution, produced by Lenox Holding of Amsterdam. Michael is also an author, an international speaker, and a radio and television personality. Michael has appeared on Geraldo, Sonya Live, Larry King Live, Hard Copy, and the Playboy channel. He has written many articles on sexual issues, including the G-spot, female sexual health, sex and drugs, and sex education. He has co-authored the book Marriage and the Family in the Year 2020 and was an editor for Handbook of Sexology, Volume VII, “Childhood and Adolescent Sexology.” Michael, before becoming a sexologist, spent 11 years studying for the priesthood.
VIRGIL PLACE, M.D. has specialized in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, and Pharmacology. After receiving his M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins, he did his internship and biochemical fellowship at Presbyterian Hospital, Chicago, and completed his training at the Mayo Clinic. Private practice gave way to clinical pharmaceutical research at Lederle, Syntex, and ALZA. Key involvement in developing hormone skin patches for women and men brought focus to the sexual problems related to hormone deficiency. He has emphasized treatment of male impotence by noninvasive pharmacologic therapy for the past five years. He has formed a new company, VIVUS, Inc., whose sole focus is optimizing therapy of impotence. Such efforts emphasize need for both partners to achieve maximal satisfaction through peak male performance.
GRANT C. RIDDLE is a technical manager by vocation and a writer by avocation. His articles on social/sexual subjects have been published in the medical journal Sexuality & Disability (1988), Fascination (1985), and OverGround (1991). His book Amputees & Devotees (1989) broke through the socially correct “conspiracy of silence” which surrounds the social/sexual concerns of disabled people specifically as they apply to amputees. His recent effort was co-authoring the autobiography of a woman parole officer who had been involved in the tumultuous events which surrounded the parole of the rapist/mutilator Lawrence Singleton in 1987, but it seems that, due to the extreme revulsion of the nature of that crime, he has encountered difficulties in locating a publisher willing to produce the book.
JAMES M. RODRIGUES, JR. has been a police officer with the San Jose Police Department in California for the past ten years. He worked as an investigator assigned to the Child Exploitation Detail for three and one-half years. As part of his assignment Detective Rodrigues worked undercover contacting and identifying pedophiles and child molesters involved in the sexual exploitation of children. Detective Rodrigues had occasion to work undercover and be contacted by a person interested in making a “snuff film,” where a young boy was to be kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and ultimately murdered on film. These acts were never completed; however, the ensuing investigation lasted ten months and gave Rodrigues in-depth background in this area. Detective Rodrigues’ experiences have given him unique insight into this sub-culture from which he has given the author guidance in this topic.
K.C. ROURKE has always been interested in people. She has explored herself and her fellow humans physically, emotionally and sensually through several “adult-oriented” occupations; she reads extensively about how people think, feel and act; she has learned much from thousands of assorted personal encounters. In the late 1960s she joined BackDrop Club and explored the role of power dynamics in sex and in life. She has since found great satisfaction in becoming the slave of a skilled and understanding Master. She has also found a compatible husband, and spends her time creating a comfortable discreet space where people with fetish/fantasy interests can play.
ED SARGENT, M.D. is a family physician in Oregon who has in the course of his practice provided medical care to some in the S/M community.
GREG SAWIN is a medical editor at ALZA Corporation (Palo Alto, CA) and has a B.A. in psychology from San Francisco State University (1979). He is also a director of the International Society for General Semantics (Concord, CA) and writes the “Dynamics of Thought and Behavior” feature in the ISGS quarterly journal Et cetera. One of his other interests is anthropology.
KRISTINA STONE, M.F.C.C. received her Masters in Counseling from the University of San Francisco and has studied in the field of Human Sexuality. She is presently in private practice as a licensed Marriage, Family and Child Counselor in Los Gatos, California. She and her husband, Steve Stone, reside in Saratoga, California.
STEVEN STONE has a background in engineering and law and is presently practicing law in California, specializing in patent, trademark and copyright matters, primarily in the medical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology fields. By virtue of their different backgrounds, Steve and Kristina were able to provide the author with some unique insights during the evolution of this work.
In addition to the above mentioned consultants there were many people who made contributions to the book, only some of whom are listed in my acknowledgements.
PHOEBE GLOECKNER, M.A., Biomedical Communications, is an illustrator of medical texts, as well as a painter and cartoonist. Some of her other work may be found in The Atrocity Exhibition by J. G. Ballard (Re/Search Publications), and Twisted Sisters, A Collection of Bad Girl Art (Penguin). Born in Philadelphia, she was moved at the age of twelve to San Francisco, where she continues to reside (as do all the artists who contributed to this book). Her chosen profession leaves absolutely no time for hobbies or amusing pastimes of any sort. Fortunately, she is able to glean satisfaction from her work. She has inadvertently become known as an artist who provides pictures for texts of salacious content. This book may represent a departure from past work, since its intent is, of course, to educate, rather than to inspire prurient feelings.
