Покинув площадь, я пошла к старым фортификациям, чтобы взглянуть на ближайший водный источник, следуя вдоль стены из гладкого кирпича, которая огибает средневековые башни со смотровыми окнами, прикрытыми козырьками, и узкими бойницами, за которыми когда-то прятались лучники. Летом вдоль стены расставляют искусственные апельсиновые деревья, обильно усыпанные белыми цветами, по которым прыгают упитанные черно-белые сороки. Над стеной тянут к солнцу свои кроны дикие яблони. По Рыцарской улице я дошла до маленькой площади с черной колонной, которую венчает русалка, сжимающая меч, – символ Варшавы. На это фантастическое существо, как мне кажется, похожа Антонина: защитница, полуженщина и полузверь. По обеим сторонам от колонны какой-то бородатый бог исторгает изо рта воду, и можно легко представить, как Антонина опускает на землю свою корзину, подставляет под струю кувшин и ждет, пока жизнь с бульканьем льется из-под земли.
