Однако нельзя отрицать, что двойная энергия экономического желания и культурной веры могут принести с собой гнет и конфликт. История полна войн за территорию и доступ к экономическому богатству; столько же найдется примеров жестокой борьбы между странами и внутри стран, мотивом которой становятся фундаменталистские и слишком жесткие культурные ценности. Взгляд на современный мир – Северная Ирландия, Балканы, бывший Советский Союз, Восточный Тимор – подтверждает, что стремление получить или удержать экономическую власть, с одной стороны, и утверждение культурной идентичности – с другой, продолжают создавать двойной стимул для конфликта. Эти соображения подсказывают, что потребуется более глубокое понимание взаимоотношений экономики и культуры как в позитивном, так и в негативном смысле, если мы хотим прогресса в улучшении мира.
