It explores the origin of forms, their role in defining living things, and the relationship between form and function. It exposes the role of genes and epigenetics and examines the forms of bacteria, protists and plants. The Explosion of Life Forms also studies the memory of animals and their sensory processes, the forms of robots (built in the image of living things), and medical technologies aimed at restoring damaged living forms. Finally, this work questions a common principle of construction in the diversity of forms, as well as the idea of an abandonment of the form, a possible hidden defect of some modern philosophies.

While the genetic definition seems to stay valid and is in use today, there is a further way of defining life via (5) thermodynamics . Also, Schrödinger had hinted towards something like negative entropy as life’s property (Schrödinger 1992, p. 70). What does this mean? Normally, according to the laws of thermodynamics, no processes can occur that increase the net order of a given system. Structures tend to dissolve over time, entropy is increasing, and our universe develops into a state of disorder, called the heat death of the universe (which is an extremely cold state because matter is so spread out). How, then, can the scale of order show us which life forms it is? The reason for this is that what has been said is only valid for closed systems. Living systems are, in contrast, open systems and create localized regions with an increasing order. The difference between open and closed systems is the open system’s exchange with their environment. As we looked at metabolism as a characteristic even to define it, life certainly has this property and is an open system. Think of sunlight nourishing the plants, for instance. Now, this local increase in order comes at the cost of an overall increase in disorder (entropy). The sun loses energy steadily by fueling the thermonuclear processes necessary to radiate and shine on Earth. This way, the laws of thermodynamics are still valid, while local order is allowed to grow. Life could be described as an open system. There is a counterexample to this thermodynamic definition of life, however, crystals, which are open systems as well, are not considered living entities (Cleland and Chyba 2010, p. 327).

So, what is life? Popular today is a version of the genetic or Darwinian definition, characterizing life as a “self-sustained chemical system capable of undergoing Darwinian evolution“ (Joyce et al . 1994, xi), including the processes of “self-reproduction, material continuity over a historical lineage, genetic variation, and natural selection” (Cleland and Chyba 2010, p. 328). This definition excludes any potential life based on other components than chemistry-based Earth life. This is why the quest to define life has been revived not only in the context of synthetic biology but also in that of astrobiology. The definition also excludes viruses, as they are not self-sustained but need a host to replicate.

2.3. Exploration

There are some objections to the Darwinian definition, as life could potentially be based on other components than chemistry. There could be computer or robotic life, as Dawkins (2010) and Dennett (1996) point out. Portraying life in a mechanical way certainly has some attractivity to it in the light of the modern scientific world view. If life can be described mechanically and in a purely functional way, why could it not be based on mechanics as well? As a matter of fact, however, although we do know quite a wealth of life forms on Earth, we do not know any life based on non-organic components. So, it makes sense to me to agree with Oparin that “[l]ife is a property of any organism, from the highest to the lowest, but it does not exist in inorganic natural objects, no matter how complicated their structure” (Oparin 2010, p. 71). There might be exceptions hidden in the depths of the universe, but Oparin would define them differently than “life”. That being said, I believe him to be right insofar that we need to focus on Earth life to understand the phenomenon better, though the result could be transferable to other environments as well.

Much about science is about the fuzziness and continuous transition in nature apart from human taxonomies. Maybe “life” is a categorial description, which is hard to apply to aspects of nature which nevertheless play an important role in the emergence of the phenomenon. When “the origin and the evolution of life coincide” (Maurel 2017, p. 22) and life is physics and chemistry with a history, the small size and gradualness of historical transitions may explain the difficulty to “capture” the moment when life on Earth emerged. “If the origin of life is seen as the evolutionary transition between the non-living and the living, then it is also necessary to recognize it as a historical process shaped in part by the vagaries of contingent events. It also suggests that attempts to draw a strict line between these two worlds may be meaningless. In other words, the appearance of life on Earth should be seen as a non-progressive evolutionary continuum that seamlessly joins the prebiotic synthesis and accumulation of organic molecules in the primitive environment, with the emergence of self-sustaining, replicative chemical systems capable of undergoing Darwinian evolution (Lazcano 2017b, p. 90).

There still might have been accelerated transitions like later in the history of life (Eldredge and Gould 1972). We should avoid, however, demanding the emergence of life to be somewhat discontinuous in case we are only motivated by the desire to ascribe meaning and distinctiveness to our own status as living beings; we could be biased. Yet even if there is nothing special about organisms, this “does not mean an absence of significant differences deserving more thorough study by scientists” (Morange 2017, p. 107).

We have written about life as a natural phenomenon. We, the ones reading and writing this, are part of the picture. We are the ones defining and applying categories on nature by use of language with its subject-predicate-object structure. One could even ask “whether life can at all be described as ‘something’ common to all living beings making them living beings, whether the term ‘life’ realistically refers to an aspect of reality, or whether the term ‘life’ is only meaningful within language” (Rehmann-Sutter 2016, p. 270). Our point of view is dominated by the perspective of intelligent, conscious and speaking life for sure. Contrary to a purely constructivist approach, I would claim, however, being alive is certainly an aspect of reality as well. That it maybe cannot exactly defined or delimited does not mean it does not exist, in all the fuzziness of nature. “The recognition that life is the outcome of an evolutionary process constrained by the laws of physics and chemistry can lead to the acceptance that many properties associated with living systems, such as replication, self-assemblage or catalyses, are also found in nonliving entities. Some systems may not be ‘half-alive’ but they can exhibit some of the properties we associate with living entities” (Lazcano 2018, p. 11).

2.4. Conclusion

A definition of life by a set of properties is the best we currently have. We used the example of water, to make clear that this may present a preliminary status only to describe life. Maybe we have to extend our informational perspective on life beyond genetic informationalism to understand the full phenomenon. This challenge may be more complex than initially imagined. Consider this: H 2O may be water, but not that what we mean when we ask for water. Pure H 2O – distilled water – would actually kill us; there is a lot more in the actual mix of “water” which makes it usable for us. Likewise, even if we identify the special relation of components which distinguishes living phenomena even before the emergence of RNA and DNA, we might think of something different when using “life” in our everyday language.

Maybe several difficulties would be resolved if we invent a new language specifically for living phenomena (an idea of A. Lazcano, private conversation) – like physics has mathematics as a language of its own. Even then, the complex phenomenon we as humans refer to by attributing something to be “alive” may be something else than life in purely scientific terms or language.
