If you want to record a new album, do you have independent recording studios?

Yes, we do, quite a lot.

You put out your last records on vinyl. Is there a market for that in China?

Yes, there is, the number of people interested in vinyl is definitely growing.

And are there any pressing plants in China?

I have heard that there are pressing plants in Guangzhou in China that can do the pressing, but Chinese punk and metal bands mostly work with pressing plants in the Czech Republic, I don’t know why, maybe they have good quality and fine price there. In the beginning we would only release CDs but that has changed.

How many record stores are there that will sell your records? Or do you have other means of distribution?

For our last album, the label did all the work. But you can do it independently as well. Every big city in China has at least one record store that sells punk records, so if you ask how many stores in China I assume there are around 30–40 active record stores. Besides that, we have Taobao stores online, similar to what Ebay is here. You can sell and buy records there.

Have you had trouble with the Chinese government since you started the band?

Not much. In China you have to apply for a bar code if you want to release an album properly. The label that released our last album asked us to change our lyrics, because the government agency contacted them. We said no and so they had a discussion about the lyrics and the agency accepted it. That is an easier way to do the business than doing it yourself.

Do policemen show up at your shows?

Yes, that has happened. But it also happened during our last show in Muenster. Normally they don’t show up. Only when the neighbours complain. But this has not happened a lot.

Do you think the Chinese government is a dictatorship?

Yes, we agree with it. Frankly, we have some limited liberty to be a Chinese citizen in nowadays. We can choose to be a punk rocker or a hip-hop rapper, we can dance in a techno club, we can tour abroad and hang out with a bunch of cool people and activists, but don’t go too far, because they may watch you. We also think that the dictator system and democratic system are actually learning from each other. There are a lot of troubles happening in the democratic systems too globally in recent years. The power and the fear are their tricks, but I think democracy is always better than dictatorship, you have a better chance for justice and making free decisions. Be careful with populism, it can be used by the propaganda machines not only by the dictatorship but also the democratic systems to manipulate people.

How many records have you released so far?

Two albums and three EPs.

You have to pay the costs for this Germany tour yourself. Can you make money out of it?

Up to now we could always cover the costs. We calculated the costs before and negotiate what we need with the larger shows and festivals. If we sold a lot of merchandise, we actually made something more than just covering the costs.

So you do the booking yourself?

We had a booker in Germany for our last tour, but this time he only did the festivals for us. He complained it’s too hard for him to do the whole tour during the summertime. So we used the contacts and friends here and booked ourselves twelve shows in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Czech Republic.

There are five people in Gum Bleed , but only four are playing instruments. Is that right?

The fifth guy Nigel is our Video-Jockey. Many venues in China have screens and projectors, sometimes even LED screens, you can do something more creative, more artistic or more interesting than just a simple backdrop. We were also one of the first bands to have a VJ in China. Mostly the indie rock bands do it, but now lots of punk bands in China try it, too.

If you record a new album, do you have some kind of plan that you follow? Like singing songs in Chinese to attract a greater audience in China?

We don’t, but the label asked us to sing a few songs in Chinese on our next album. It can be really helpful to get the attention of the mainstream audience in China.

Are there other hot spots for punk rock outside Beijing in China?

The most exciting punk scene in China is located in the big cities. Beijing always has the most of bands and major audience. Wuhan used to be great, but now if you want to play a show there you need to book two years ahead. Shanghai is also great with an international and a young scene. It has become difficult in Hong Kong. They used to have a cool club called Hidden Agenda but they always had trouble with the local government.

This year I realize that there are more and more young people joining punk shows, I’m talking about the kids around 20 years old. Same in Europe that we can see this time on tour. We are very happy and encouraged by that, punks not dead!

Do you have trouble with racism in China?

Racism is not a big topic in China. People are focusing on the economy and on hard work to make it big, that is the biggest topic, mainly no matter where you are from or who you are. Of course, it exists, but it is very different than it is here. It’s not getting recognized on the level it is in the western world. It’s part of everyday life. That’s a topic we try to tell people about.
