If a horse puts its ears strictly backwards, hold on immediately! That means the horse is combative and could bite you. In this case just keep standing absolutely calm and wait a while, whether it becomes curious. It will probably shake its head after some time, gain trust and pricks up its ears again. Actually it was only afraid of you! Now approach the horse more closely and let it sniff at you. The horse has yet achieved the necessary confidence that you will do it no harm. At the smell of a human, a horse is able to recognize how to estimate over a person. If your fear for horses is great, a horse is going to smell that by your cold sweat.

When your love towards horses is bigger than your fear, the pouring out of scents is going to relax again and the horse starts playing with you. It shoves you softly with its nose and nibbles at your clothes. It likes to call upon you to join in the game. At best you have already before `armed´ yourself with a carrot which you slowly produce out of your pocket by magic and offer the horse as a sign of your friendship. Then it will never forget you no more. If a horse knows you well and you became friends, it welcomes you with its head high up and pricked up ears. It is neighing happily which leads to swelling its nostrils. It looks very beautiful!

If a horse keeps its ears strictly laid backwards, makes a long neck and snaps at you, so that you can see its teeth, there is unfortunately no chance to form friendship with it. Perhaps it has one single owner since already a very long time to whom it is truly devoted. This is why the horse does not allow any other person approaching it more closely.

The talk was about horses that live in a stable and can look outside through open shutters. When horses are grazing on a pasture in company with other horses, it is rather seldom that they come to the fence where you stand and like to caress one of them. However, you can attract their attention by clicking with the tongue. If you have a bag with apples or carrots with you, there is a high possibility that they come over to you. Take care that there is enough for all of them so that you can fairly distribute your gift and let everyone have a goody. Otherwise there will be a quarrel among the horses and that is surely not what you wanted. While they are chewing delightfully you can caress them comfortingly and talk to them in soft words. Is your present used up they retire again to continue grazing. Full of appreciation they might altogether perform a marvellous gallop for you, thus making sure you will return, because you admire them. Several praising words from you for the show, they will certainly keep in mind.

You must absolutely not approach a mother mare with its foal. In the beginning the mare might look at you quite friendly, whereas it is likely to turn around abruptly and kick off after you with its hind hooves. There is nothing but its desire to protect its foal from danger. Of course you can surprise a mare with natural delicacies as well. Sometimes it just takes time to establish confidence between a horse and yourself. After the mare has gotten acquainted with you, it will certainly not have anything against your caressing its irresistibly sweet filly.

A foal is entirely frivolous and harmless. When it knows you well you can caress it, grab around its neck to measure bodily powers, or run with it across the meadow. If it is nodding with the head just like a human who wants to say “yes”, it wants to attract your attention, because it is in the mood for a playful adventure together with you.

Within the rules foals do not bite yet at all. However, one should always wear something which protects the skin and may get dirty, because horses like nibbling about clothing in general.

You ought to be especially cautious with elderly horses. Their strength is diminishing and they do not feel that well no more under their animal skins. They have already experienced a lot, of which you do not know anything. Elderly horses are likely to react pretty weird out of the blue. They possibly even do not like to eat what you have brought for them and leave behind a sad impression on you. Simply comfort them with tender words. That will do them good.
