The sky still looked bright as ever. Only the tree leaves that were moving around because of a light breeze, were slightly losing their bright green color. Though there wasn’t any feeling of a great fall starting as most things were still stuck in summer. She rested her elbows on the windowsill and stared blankly at the leaving people. «Lucky bastards» was the only thing that came into her mind. «„Maybe next year, when middle school ends can I go home like them. Without any worries, only stupid dreams that will probably never come true, but you never know, maybe those lucky bastards have some immense luck.“» Jay’s dream was simple. Just to get into a top university. Somewhere nice and quiet where all the students were big nerds, only thinking about studying. Not like she wasn’t a nerd herself. There was also another reason. It bugged her, but she still thought about it often. The reason was simple, she can’t live with her aunt her whole life. She needs to become independent and strong. Someone who can buy her own house and make her own money. Like those adults that were picking up their kids outside at the moment. She laughed a little and buried her face in her arms. «„I guess even I have some stupid dreams.“» Most of the students had already left, and only a number of them were still waiting. Even Dirk’s group didn’t have enough patience to wait in school and they also slowly walked out of the gate. Jay looked relieved. Her morning paleness could no longer be seen as the sun shined on her face. «„At last, they left.“»
Jay straightened her back and turned around to also get going. She managed to make a few steps down the corridor when suddenly the ground started slightly shaking. Jay’s eyes opened a little wider. Those sensations were definitely not an earthquake. They spread around the hallway. Through the walls and even making the class windows shake, even if you couldn’t see that with your eyes. That tingling sensation also spread all over her skin and into her wrists. It felt like her heart made a few louder beats. It was a feeling Jay had never felt before. She stopped and tried to find where it was coming from. She looked at the ground while trying to catch a quiet sound from the center of those vibrations. It was a little tune that you could barely hear, coming from behind a thick metal door at the end of the hall. Jay walked closer to the door as the sensations became stronger and the sound became louder. She could hear her heart beating really fast. Mixing with the beat and following the tune until it became one with it. It was a feeling Jay had never felt. She reached for the door handle and slowly pushed the door open. All she wanted now was to hear it even more clearly. It was like she was hypnotized by the melody. Like a snake coming out of the basket when a snake charmer plays a song on the pungi. The door opened and the music stopped. Jay was snapped back to reality. What was she doing? She should have just walked past the door. The room was rather small and pretty dark as the blinds on the windows were closed. At one corner of the room stood a small piano. The paint on it had worn off in many places and it was missing the left pedal. The walls were covered in posters and music sheets were lying everywhere on the ground. In the middle of the room, a young woman who was staring at Jay was holding a bass guitar. «„Oh my, sorry. I thought everyone had left so I could play a little louder.“» she lifted the guitar strap over her head and put the guitar on a stand that was next to her. «„Was I too loud?“» Jay was a little startled «„No, no, I just accidentally walked in. I was just passing by and heard a nice sound, so I opened the door.“» «„Pfft,“» the woman let out a small laugh. Jay tilted her head.
«„You’re funny!“» the woman squatted down and started picking up all the messy notes that had formed piles here and there. «„Do you play any instruments?“» she smiled and looked at Jay. «„Me? No, absolutely not.“» Jay had never once thought about learning how to play an instrument. The woman stood up and put the pile she had collected on top of the piano. «„Do you wanna try playing some? We are always looking for new school band members. There aren’t really many right now. You know how much our school prioritizes studying above anything else. Most of our current members already knew how to play instruments before joining, but I can always teach you from scratch. Are you interested in anything specific? Piano? Guitar? Maybe trums?“» the woman walked closer to Jay as she took a step back. «„I’m sorry, I really have to go home right now, but I’ll think about it.“» Jay walked out of the room and closed the door «„Goodbye!“» For some reason she hadn’t wanted to say no.
Jay walked down the lone road leading to her house. It was so familiar to the point of every bigger stone on the ground or every pit that had been left behind after a long rain. The old fashioned country house at the end of the road was a place where she had spent all of her nights.
