В одном сюжете агентства Рейтер тридцатипятилетняя мать, представительница народа хуту по имени Муканквайа, рассказывает, как она и другие женщины хуту окружили детей своих «врагов» — соседей-тутси. С поразительной решительностью они забили ошеломленных детей до смерти палками. «Они не кричали, потому что знали нас, — сказала она. — Они только выпучили глаза. Мы убили очень многих, я не могу даже посчитать». Она оправдывала свои действия тем, что она и другие женщины-убийцы «сделали детям одолжение»: лучше, если дети умрут сейчас, потому что иначе они останутся сиротами, ведь их отцов зарубили мачете, которые правительство выдало мужчинам-хуту, а их матерей изнасиловали и убили. У этих детей была бы очень трудная жизнь, рассуждала она и другие женщины-хуту. Поэтому, забив их до смерти, они освободили их от печального будущего.
