В 2007 году Африку подобная трусость не спасет. Масштабное кровопролитие притупило чувство горя и осушило слезы. Кто оплакивает детей Дарфура, чьи матери ушли за хворостом и так и не вернулись домой? Немногие, учитывая, что бюджет Комиссии ООН по делам беженцев составляет всего 550 миллионов фунтов стерлингов, а нуждающихся в заботе – 21 миллион человек.

Зоны военных действий нуждаются в дополнительных финансовых средствах, миротворческих силах, а не в помощи военных, которая либо бесполезна, либо неприменима. Речь идет о необходимости сокращения ядерного вооружения стран Запада и пересмотра Договора о нераспространении ядерного оружия. Великобритания, несмотря на утраченное благодаря Ираку влияние, может внести свой вклад в изменение сил в 2007 году. Она может объединиться с Европой и потребовать предпринять согласованные действия по урегулированию ситуации в Дарфуре и Сомали. Она может лоббировать вопрос о расширении количества постоянных членов Совбеза ООН. Парламент страны может остановить модернизацию Трайдент-2.

Таковы уроки, преподнесенные Саддамом и войной, которой не должно было случиться. Если Запад вновь вспомнит о человеколюбии и истории, может быть, некоторые катастрофы года минувшего можно будет похоронить в прошлом вместе с мертвым диктатором. Теперь, когда Саддам покоится в могиле, настало время вспомнить, кому нужна наша помощь, когда нужно сражаться, и что оплакивать.
