Однако на Боспоре митридатовские установления сохранялись и продолжали действовать, превратив его в могущественное независимое государство и потенциальную угрозу римским интересам. С целью их ликвидации Римом был предпринят ряд попыток объединить Понт и Боспор в одно царство. Неудачи Полемонидов и римлян на Боспоре объясняются тем, что полисные традиции здесь существенно ослабли, а варварское проникновение на хору значительно усилилось, особенно после деятельности Митридата Евпатора. Это способствовало сохранению Боспора как эллинистического в своей основе государства вплоть до конца античной эпохи, тогда как Понт, где длительное правление Полемонидов полностью разрушило митридатовские установления и формы землевладения, быстрее перешел к восприятию римского порядка и норм жизни. Как только угроза реставрации митридатизма и культивировавшегося ранее "иранизма" в политической и социально-экономической областях была ликвидирована, Полемонидовский Понт тотчас был обращен в римскую провинцию.
