Саксофоны обычно изготавливают из металла. Звук определяется формой трубки, которая у инструмента коническая, а также тем, как вибрации трости формируют начало и конец нот. Очень важна форма мундштука, и Чарли Паркер, вероятно, использовал свой обычный мундштук с пластиковым саксофоном. Я играю на прямом саксофоне сопрано, который может звучать как (деревянный) гобой, потому что у них конические трубки и для создания звука в них применяются трости.
