The man below him nodded.

“The creature that possessed you was a kind of phantom, so the answer to that question must be ‘absolutely none’. But don’t you see it? Crime committed not for gain, but merely for crime’s own sake. Fear and suffering imposed for no real reason. Harmless, innocent people framed for deeds that they were in no way responsible for. A whole city thrown into turmoil. All of this speaks of a penetrating intellect, yes, and yet a cruel and very devious one, which delights in the harm it causes. The work of an individual – in other words – who has pure, unfettered evil wired in his brain and running through his very blood.”

Rooker was still staring at the great detective with sheer incomprehension. But Holmes raised himself to his full height.

“When I went down the Reichenbach Falls, I returned to life as a human being. But I was not the only man who took that fatal plunge. And the other one, or so it seems, has come back into this world in a different form entirely.”

Holmes turned to face the wall where the true criminal had disappeared. His eyes blazed, and his fists were clenched so tightly they went white around the knuckles.

“You may have evaded me this time,” he muttered through clenched teeth. “But mark my word, sooner or later I shall hunt you down and put an end to you. You have my solemn promise on that score, Professor James Moriarty.”
