Technical principles of aikido
– Hanmi (jap. — half body)
The Hanmi principle describes the idea that in relation to an opponent, the body should always be in a comfortable position. The body should be turned only halfway, then it is possible to protect yourself from attack, to get away from the attack in time and to control your movements freely and quickly.
– Chūshin-ryoku (jap. — center of power).
The Chūshin-ryoku is the center of power. It’s the essence point of aikido. It means «to feel centered» not only physically, but also psychologically. It’s like the «center of spiritual and physical strength» of a man. Having mastered it no matter what situation a person gets into in his or her life, whether it is daily aikido training or life difficulties outside the tatami, one has to learn to be in its center and unite around its spiritual, physical and psychological center.
This principle is implemented in the technical performances that exist in aikido. At the same time, this principle is implemented through a student’s understanding of all his or her abilities, limitations, and abilities. The more a student learns about himself or herself, the more opportunities he or she has to feel this center. The emphasis on self-reflection is to ask students what they can and cannot do, and to pay attention to their individuality.
– Chūshin-sen (jap. — central line). This term is also used in Kendo martial art.
The central line of a person runs from the top of the head, straight down the body, dividing it equally into half. In the world and in the universe, everyone has a central line, and all movement is made through that line. In aikido, the idea of Chushin-sen is that instead of «holding the line» and defending ourselves by leaning on one point, we move from the line of attack to a more advantageous position. Unlike karate, for example, where one person attacks and another person responds by «standing still,» blocking the attack (throwing it off the path) and counterattacking from the same place.
