The boy got so excited about the chase, that he didn’t even notice how he arrived at the river.

Бабочка перелетела воду и унеслась далеко за деревья.

The butterfly flew to the other side and soon was far away.

Эйка расстроился, что не успел догнать бабочку и получше её рассмотреть.

Eika became upset that he couldn’t catch up to the butterfly to take a closer look.

Мальчику было только три года, и об опасности быстрой лесной речки он знал только по рассказам.

The boy was just three years old, so he had only heard about the dangers of a fast-moving forest river from stories.

Ему сильно захотелось потрогать воду рукой и взять со дна красивый гладкий камень.

He really wanted to touch the water and get a beautiful smooth stone from the bottom.

Берег оказался крутым, а камень скользким, Эйка споткнулся и кубарем покатился в воду.

The bank was steep, and the stones were slippery. Eika tripped and fell in the water.

Страшно могла бы закончиться эта история, если бы не бельчонок Дай.

This story could have ended terribly, if not for Dan.

Он, как и в день знакомства, громко запищал, тем самым привлекая внимание и призывая на помощь!

The squirrel started squeaking loudly, just like when they first met. He tried to attract attention and call for help.

Писк этот далеко разносился по поляне, ведь зверек очень испугался, что его друга унесёт река.

Dan’s voice echoed throughout the forest – he got very scared that the river would carry away his friend

Хорошо, что родители Эйки были рядом во дворе и услышали зов бельчонка вовермя.

Luckily, Eika’s parents were nearby and heard the squirrel’s cry just in time.

Папа подбежал и одной рукой выхватил малыша из реки.

Eika’s Dad ran up and pulled him out of the river.

Течение было очень сильным, но Эйка успел схватить ветку, склонившуюся к воде, и удержаться.

The current was very fast, but Eika managed to grab a tree branch and hold on.

Мама сразу же сняла с мальчика мокрое белье и обернула его в свою теплую мягкую кофту.

Eika’s Mom immediately took off his wet clothes and wrapped the boy in her warm, soft jacket.

Все были очень напуганы.

Everyone was really scared.

Мама подхватила бельчонка на руки, папа – Эйку.

Mom picked up the squirrel, and Dad lifted Eika.

Все отправились в дом пить тёплый чай с малиной и есть ватрушки, чтобы согреться и успокоиться.

Everyone went back home. There they had hot tea with raspberries and ate pies to get warm and calm down.

В этот день храбрый бельчонок Дай спас своего друга, а Эйка с тех пор больше никогда не ходил один к реке.

On that day, brave Squirrel Dan saved his friend. And Eika never went to the river alone again.

Так и началась их долгая и верная дружба.

That’s how their strong, long-lasting friendship began.

Eika and a million.

Эйка уже полчаса ворочался в своей кроватке и всё не мог снова уснуть.

Eika had been tossing and turning in his bed for already half an hour and couldn't fall asleep again.

Может, потому что рано заснул и уже выспался или потому что замёрз, а может, потому что хочется в туалет…

Maybe, because he fell asleep early and already got enough sleep, or because he was cold, or, maybe, because he wanted to go to the bathroom …

Миллион причин могут найтись, почему Эйка в это раннее субботнее утро не спал.

There could be a million reasons why Eika was not sleeping that early Saturday morning.

– Интересно, а почему мама и папа всё время меня спрашивают, кем я хочу стать? Неужели я, как гусеница, превращусь в куколку, а потом в бабочку или ещё в кого-то?.. Раз они меня спрашивают, значит я могу выбрать, кем мне стать и в кого превратиться.

“I wonder why mom and dad always ask me who I want to become. Does it mean I, like a caterpillar, will turn into a chrysalis, and then into a butterfly or into someone else? If they ask me, it means I can choose who I want to become”

Эйка в этом был уверен. И доказательств было много.

Eika was sure of it. And there was a lot of evidence.

Первое: мама его всё время пеленала как куколку в тёплое одеяло-конвертик.

First: Mom swaddled him all the time like a chrysalis in a warm envelope-like blanket.

Второе: папа всё время называл его по-разному: то Эйка, то человечек, то зайчик, то арбузик, то птичка…

Second: Dad called him differently all the time: Eika, little man, bunny, sweetie, birdie…

Третье: бабушка каждый раз, когда видела Эйку, охала и ахала – как же он изменился.

Third, every time when grandma saw Eika, she oohed and ahhed at how much he has changed.

Сомнений не осталось, что удивительная трансформация превращения произойдёт.

There was no doubt that an amazing transformation should happen.

Эйка должен в кого-то превратиться. Но в кого? Это же самое важное!

Eika has to turn into someone. But into whom? That's the most important thing!
