Dana Evans, who made her first appearance in Sidney Sheldon's The Best Laid Plans, is a spunky, good-looking, young Washington TV journalist who's recently returned to the nation's capital from the Balkans, where she adopted a handicapped war orphan who's having trouble adjusting to life in America. But that doesn't keep Dana from following a story all over the world, from Washington to Aspen, Nice, Juneau, Düsseldorf, Rome, Brussels, Moscow, and Siberia. Each of these brief visits is like a postcard--a local landmark or two, an interesting local restaurant (at least in the European venues), and another piece of the puzzle, which has to do with why every member of a venerable, old Washington dynasty has died a violent death in the last year. It seems strange that in a media-savvy city like Washington, no one but Dana has noticed there's a pattern in the rapid extinction of the Winthrops or even whispered the words family vendetta. But that's why pretty, young girl TV reporters were invented, at least by Sheldon.
As Dana sets out to investigate the distinguished career of the Winthrop family patriarch, her lover Jeff, a sports anchor at her station, is called away to administer aid and succor to his former wife, a beautiful model who's realized, too little and too late, that she never should have dumped him. And Kemal, the 12-year-old orphan, is being drugged by his baby sitter, who's in cahoots with at least one set of bad guys. Dana hasn't noticed how tractable the temperamental boy has become recently because she's been dressing up like a two-bit Russian tramp to infiltrate a secret weapons base in Siberia... Do you hear the words movie locations? But all's well that ends well, as it usually does for Sheldon's heroines, and in the meantime you've learned where the five-star hotels are and what to order in a famous restaurant in Rome. A slick, commercial, slightly thin tale told by a craftsman of the genre.

He said without preamble, «We may have lucked into something. I heard a story last night that might be a clue to what we're looking for.»

Dana felt her heart quicken. «Yes?»

«There's a man named»—he consulted a slip of paper on his desk— «Dieter Zander, in Düsseldorf. He was in some kind of business with Taylor Winthrop.»

Dana was listening intently.

«I don't have the whole story, but apparently something very bad happened between them. They had a violent falling-out, and Zander swore to kill Winthrop. It sounds like it might be worth checking on.»

«It certainly does. I'll look into it right away, Matt.»

They chatted for a few more minutes, then Dana left.

I wonder how I can find out more about it? She suddenly thought of Jack Stone and FRA. He might know something. She found the private number he had given her and called it.

His voice came on the line. «Jack Stone.»

«It's Dana Evans.»

«Hello, Miss Evans. What can I do for you?»

«I'm trying to find something out about a man named Zander in Düsseldorf.»

«Dieter Zander?»

«Yes. You know him?»

«We know who he is.»

Dana registered thewe. «Can you tell me anything about him?»

«Is this in connection with Taylor Winthrop?»

«Yes.»

«Taylor Winthrop and Dieter Zander were partners in a business deal. Zander was sent to prison for manipulating some stock, and while he was in prison, his house burned down, killing his wife and three children. He blames Taylor Winthrop for what happened.»

And Taylor Winthrop and his wife had died in a fire. Dana listened in shock. «Is Zander still in prison?»

«No. I believe he got out last year. Anything else?»

«No. Thank you very, very much.»

«This is just between us.»

«I understand.»

The line went dead.

Now there are three possibilities, Dana thought.

Dieter Zander in Düsseldorf.

Vincent Mancino in Rome.

Marcel Falcon in Brussels.

I'll go to Düsseldorf first.

Olivia said, «Mrs. Hudson is on line three.»

«Thank you.» Dana picked up the phone. «Pamela?»

«Hello, Dana. I know this is sudden, but a good friend has just come to town and Roger and I are giving him a little party next Wednesday. I know Jeff is still out of town, but we would love to have you come. Are you free?»

«I'm afraid I'm not. I'm leaving for Düsseldorf tonight.»

«Oh. I'm sorry.»

«And, Pamela—»

«Yes?»

«Jeff may be gone for a while.»

There was a silence. «I hope everything is all right.»

«Yes. I'm sure it will be.»It has to be.

THAT EVENING ATDULLES airport, Dana boarded a Lufthansa jet to Düsseldorf. She had telephoned Steffan Mueller, who worked at Kabel Network to tell him she was on her way. Dana's mind was filled with what Matt Baker had told her. If Dieter Zander blamed Taylor Winthrop for —

«Guten Abend. Ich heisse Hermann Friedrich. Ist es das ersten mal das sie Deutschland besuchen?»

Dana turned to look at her seat partner. He was in his fifties, trim, with an eye patch and a full mustache.

«Good evening,» Dana said.

«Ah, you are American?»

«Yes.»

«Many Americans come to Düsseldorf. It is a beautiful city.»

«So I've heard.»And his family had died in a fire.

«This is your first visit?»

«Yes.»Could it have been a coincidence?

«It is beautiful, beautiful. Düsseldorf is divided by the Rhine River, you know, into two parts. The older part is on the right bank—»

Steffan Mueller can tell me more about Dieter Zander.

«—and the modern part is on the left bank. Five bridges connect the two sides.» Hermann Friedrich moved a little closer to Dana. «You are visiting friends, perhaps, in Düsseldorf?»

It's beginning to fit together.

Friedrich leaned a little closer. «If you are alone, I know a—»

«What? Oh. No, I'm meeting my husband there.»

Hermann Friedrich's smile faded. «Gut. Er ist ein glücklicher Mann.»

There was a line of taxis out in front of the Düsseldorf International Airport. Dana took one to the Breidenbacher Hof in the center of town. It was an elegant old hotel with an ornate lobby.

The clerk behind the desk said, «We were expecting you, Miss Evans. Welcome to Düsseldorf.»

«Thank you.» Dana signed the register.

The clerk picked up the telephone and spoke into it. «Der Raum sollte betriebsbereit sein. Hast.» He replaced the receiver and turned to Dana. «I'm so sorry, Fräulein, your room is not quite ready. Please have a bite to eat as our guest, and I will call you as soon as the maid is through cleaning it.»

Dana nodded. «Very well.»

«Let me show you to the dining salon.»

Upstairs in Dana's room, two electronics experts were putting a camera in a wall clock.

Thirty minutes later Dana was in her room, unpacking. Her first telephone call was to Kabel Network.

«I've arrived, Steffan,» Dana said.

«Dana! I could not believe you were really coming. What are you doing for dinner?»

«I hope I'm having it with you.»

«You are. We're going to Im Schiffchen. Eight o'clock?»

«Perfect.»

Dana was dressed and going out the door when her cell phone rang. She hurriedly took it out of her purse.

«Hello?»

«Hello, darling. How are you?»

«I'm fine, Jeff.»

«And where are you?»

«I'm in Germany. Düsseldorf. I think I'm finally onto something.»

«Dana, be careful. God, I wish I were with you.»

So do I, Dana thought. «How is Rachel?»

«The chemotherapy treatments are draining her. It's pretty rough.»

«Is she going to be—?» She could not finish the sentence.

«It's too early to tell. If the chemotherapy is effective, she has a good chance of going into remission.»

«Jeff, please tell her how sorry I am.»

«I will. Is there anything I can do for you?»

«Thanks, I'm fine.»

«I'll call you tomorrow. I just wanted to tell you I love you, sweetheart.»

«I love you, Jeff. Good-bye.»

«Good-bye.»

Rachel came out of her bedroom. She had on a robe and slippers, and a Turkish towel was wrapped around her head.

«How is Dana?»

«She's fine, Rachel. She asked me to tell you how sorry she is.»

«She's very much in love with you.»

«I'm very much in love with her.»

Rachel moved closer to him. «You and I were in love, weren't we, Jeff? What happened?»

He shrugged. «Life. Or I should say “lives.” We led separate ones.»

«I was too busy with my modeling career.» She was trying to fight back tears. «Well, I won't be doing that again, will I?»

He put his arms on her shoulders. «Rachel, you're going to be fine. The chemotherapy is going to work.»

«I know. Darling, thank you for being here with me. I couldn't have faced this alone. I don't know what I would do without you.»

Jeff had no answer to that.

Im Schiffchen was an elegant restaurant in a fashionable part of Düsseldorf. Steffan Mueller walked in and grinned as he saw Dana.

«Dana! Mein Gott. I haven't seen you since Sarajevo.»

«It seems forever, doesn't it?»

«What are you doing here? Did you come for the festival?»

«No. Someone asked me to look up a friend of his, Steffan.» A waiter came up to the table and they ordered drinks.

«Who's the friend?»

«His name is Dieter Zander. Have you heard of him?»

Steffan Mueller nodded. «Everyone has heard of him. He's quite a character. He was in a big scandal. He's a billionaire, but he was stupid enough to swindle some stockholders and get caught. He should have gotten twenty years, but he pulled some strings and they let him out in three. He claims he's innocent.»
