В ситуациях, когда описываемое событие ушло далеко в прошлое и почти не осталось свидетелей, мы, историки и авторы, многим обязаны тем людям, которые предпочли записать свои воспоминания, а также тем, кто постарался эти воспоминании упорядочить, прежде чем станет слишком поздно. Я не исключение; я обязана в равной степени людям, которые пережили тот невероятный опыт, и историкам, которые этих людей отыскали. Без них эта книга не увидела бы свет.

С огромным уважением и благодарностью я подчеркиваю мужество и жизнестойкость Приски, Рахель и Анки – трех матерей, чья воля к жизни стала центральной идеей книги. К сожалению, я не успела встретиться с ними, но, проведя столько времени с их воспоминаниями, я чувствую себя так, будто знала их лично. К огромной радости, у меня был неограниченный доступ к свидетельствам, которыми располагали их семьи, устным и письменным мемуарам, множеству записей, документов и писем, которые они прежде давали и другим исследователям. От каждого их письма и слова исходит вера и надежда.
